CAF WCL: Green Buffaloes off to a flying start in Morocco

Green Buffaloes Women’s Football Club’s 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League campaign is off to a flying start thanks to a brilliant 4-0 win over Liberia’s Determine Girls.

The COSAFA Champions kicked off the tournament with a dominant performance at the Stade Moulay Hassan in Rabat.

Coach Charles Haalubono’s lasses dominated play from the word go and were 1-0 up in the 8th minute.

Ireen Lungu’s defense splitting pass found Maweta Chilenga unmarked and just the goalkeeper Jackie Touah to beat, her first effort was blocked, but the ball went back straight at her and she had a second crack at it, this time deflecting off a defender and into the back of the net.

The Zambian giants thought they had doubled their lead ten minutes later but Ireen Lungu’s goal was chopped off as Hellen Chanda was offside in the build up to the goal.

The second goal came at the hour mark as Natasha Nanyangwe finished off a brilliant low cross from the female Computer who was easily controlling the game.

A minute later it was 3-0 as Lungu again set up another goal this time Hellen Chanda with an easy tap in inside the area.

Buffaloes were piling pressure on Determine Girls and Natasha Nanyangwe could have grabbed a brace just minutes to the break but after doing the hard part of pickpocketing a defender and beating another she pulled her shot wide with only the keeper to beat.

The match went to the break with Buffaloes carrying a comfortable 3-0 lead.

The Zambian side came back with the same energy and continued to control the match.

They added a fourth 13 minutes into the second stanza as Ireen Lungu’s goal bound shot was pushed into the goal by goalie Jackie Touah.

Haalubono made some changes in the second half introducing Diana Banda, Anita Mulenga and Jessy Zulu for Judith Zulu, Natasha Nanyangwe and Hellen Chanda respectively.

Later, Memory Nthala was brought on to take up the place of Maweta Chilenga.

Determine Girls tried to rally and push for a consolation goal late in the second half but Buffaloes held on to win the match 4-0, keeping a clean sheet.

Buffaloes’ next match will be against tournament hosts ASFAR on 2 November at 21h00.
