CAF CL: Ahly hold Zanaco as Zambian champions maintain group D lead

Zambian champions Zanaco picked a vital point at home that sees them maintain the lead on top of the group F log after playing to a 0 – 0 draw against Al Ahly.

Numba Mumamba’s side only needed a win to secure a place in the quarter finals of the CAF Champions League but visitors were determined to pick a win as they pressed hard for a goal right from the start.

Toaster Nsabata was again in fine form to deny Al Ahly any goal and he was fortunate to see a looped ball come off the upright in the first half.

Felix Nyaende had a couple of good chances but he failed to beat the goalie at one point doing well to move into space but he placed his shot off target.

The result sees Zanaco go nine games unbeaten in the competition five as they stand on 11 points.

Should third placed Wydad Casablanca who are on 6 points fail to win against Coton Sport later today, Zanaco’s qualification will be confirmed.

If Casablanca pick a win, Zanaco will need to pick a result away in Morocco next week to confirm their qualification.

  1. I fear that Zanaco might miss out despite the 11 points. Al Ahly are meeting Coton Sport and they are assured of getting the three points and will reach 11 points with a superior goal difference to that of Zanaco. Wydad are deadly at home and I fear Zanaco may fail to contain them.
