Konkola Blades moved to the top of Stream A while Green Buffaloes climbed to second in Stream B after securing narrow victories in Sunday’s MTN Super League Transitional Season Matchweek Six fixtures.
A first-half free-kick from Biston Banda earned Konkola Blades a hard-fought 1-0 away win over bottom-placed Makeni All Stars, while substitute John Bukata scored the decisive goal as Green Buffaloes edged Mufulira Wanderers by the same margin at Sunset Stadium.
The results reshaped the standings in both streams, with Blades making a three-place jump to the summit of Stream A and Buffaloes closing the gap on Stream B leaders Green Eagles.
At Reiz Arena, Blades found the breakthrough in the 37th minute when striker Banda curled a direct free-kick into the net to give the visitors a crucial advantage.
The goal, Banda’s first of the transitional campaign, proved decisive as the Chililabombwe outfit held on to secure their fourth victory in five matches.
The result lifted Blades from fourth to first place in Stream A with 12 points from five matches, having recorded four wins and one defeat. They have scored nine goals and conceded five.
FC MUZA dropped to second on 11 points, despite boasting the stream’s best defensive record.
For Makeni All Stars, the difficult start to the campaign continued. They remain bottom of the standings with just one point from five matches, having lost four consecutive games. They have scored only twice and conceded 12 goals.
At Sunset Stadium in Lusaka, Green Buffaloes also claimed maximum points, with second-half substitute Bukata making the difference against Mufulira Wanderers.
After a goalless first half, coach Aggrey Chiyangi introduced Bukata at the break, and the forward repaid his coach’s faith by finding the back of the net in the 62nd minute.
Bukata came close to doubling his tally 13 minutes later, but his powerful effort was blocked by the Wanderers goalkeeper as Buffaloes continued to press.
His solitary strike was nevertheless enough to secure a 1-0 victory and extend Buffaloes’ unbeaten start to the season.
The win lifted the Nyanta Boys to second place in Stream B with 11 points from five matches, level with leaders Green Eagles, who retain top spot on goal difference.
Green Eagles boast a +5 goal difference compared to Buffaloes’ +4, having conceded just once in five matches.
The match also provided a memorable milestone for young left-back Felix Mulenga, who was named All Stars Motor Spares Man of the Match on his full MTN Super League debut.
Mulenga, who joined Buffaloes from Nangweshi Pirates ahead of the transitional season, impressed with his composure and defensive contribution down the left flank.
Mufulira Wanderers, meanwhile, remain in trouble following another defeat.
The loss leaves Wanderers second from bottom in Stream B with two points from five matches. They have managed just one goal all season, the lowest scoring return across both streams.
In the other Stream B encounter, Mutondo Stars claimed their first point of the campaign after holding Roan United to a 1-1 draw.
Roan took the lead through Clifford Hamunkoyo in first-half stoppage time, with the winger finding the net in the 45th+1 minute.
However, Mutondo responded in the closing stages when Silwimba Raphael equalised in the 80th minute to rescue a point for the hosts.
The result ended Mutondo’s run of four consecutive defeats, although they remain bottom of Stream B with one point from five matches.
Roan, meanwhile, moved to seven points after five games, having recorded one victory, two draws and two defeats.
With the transitional season gathering momentum, Konkola Blades have taken control of Stream A, while the battle for supremacy in Stream B is developing into a close contest between Green Eagles and Green Buffaloes, who are separated by just one goal on goal difference.
