Asanovic keeping an eye on Friday’s 2023 AFCON draw

New Chipolopolo Boys coach Aljosa Asanovic has said he is eager to know Zambia’s opponents in the qualifiers for next’s African Cup of Nations.

The draws for the AFCON 2023 qualifiers will take place in Douala, Cameroon on Friday, January 21, 2022.

During Tuesday’s official unveiling of his 4 year deal, the 56 year old emphasized on the importance of the draws in Doula.

“The most important thing for me is the draw for the next cup [2023 African Cup of Nations],” the former Croatia assistant coach said.

“It is the most important thing for me, for FAZ and my players. We want to know who and when we will play. This is the only focus for me in this moment.

Asanovic is not new to the national team set up having spent close to 4 months as Beston Chambeshi’s Technical Advisor last year.

Due to the Covid outbreak last year, the African Cup of Nations was postponed 2021 to 2022 and now the next edition is sooner than most realize in 18 month.

The 2023 AFCON will be staged from June to July, next year in Ivory Coast while Guinea will host the 2026.

He previously served as assistant to Slaven Bilic during Bilic’s time in charge of Croatia from 2006 to 2012, but he has limited experience as a head coach.

The Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium, the Ebimpé Olympic Stadium, the Stade San Pedro, and the Peace Stadium are the venues where the 2023 AFCON will take place.

The preliminary round will be played by a knock-out system: home and away matches and will include the lower-ranked teams per the FIFA rankings.

The teams qualified from this round will reach the group stage composed of 48 teams.

Zambia last played at the African Cup of Nations in 2015 and have missed the last 3 editions.
