A statue for Chris Katongo?

What about a statue for Christopher Katongo outside Lusaka’s National Heroes Stadium?

Katongo captained Zambia to AFCON triumph 11 years ago in Gabon.

He was inspirational as he led Zambia to their first Africa Cup of Nations title.

He scored three goals en route to the final of the tournament in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon and then struck a successful penalty in an 8-7 shoot-out victory over favourites Ivory Coast to lift the trophy in Libreville.

After his incredible showcase at the continental showpiece, British Broadcasting Network (BBC) went on to win the 2012 BBC African Footballer of the Year award.

The then 30-year-old Zambia captain beat off competition from Demba Ba, Didier Drogba, Younes Belhanda and Yaya Toure to become the first winner from southern Africa in the history of the award.

If at all, Katongo’s statue will be mounted at National Heroes Stadium, then one wouldn’t rule out other legends.

There also suggestions that North, South, West and East wings at the 60,000 capacity should be named after the Efford Chabala’s 1993 team.

Alex ‘Computer’ Chola, Godfrey ‘Ucar’ Chitalu and Kalusha Bwalya will also deserve to be recognized in a similar way.

The National Heroes Stadium is named after the national team players who perished off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in Gabon 30 years ago.
