14-year-old Chibamba announces himself with eight-save debut for Mbala Midsport

By George Nkula Mafupa

Fourteen-year-old goalkeeper Abraham Chibamba made a memorable introduction to senior football, producing a standout performance on his debut for Mbala Midsport in the FAZ Northern Division One Transitional League.

The Grade 10 pupil at Mbala Boarding Secondary School was handed his first-team opportunity in Mbala Midsport’s Week Five meeting with Senga Young Stars FC and responded with an impressive display between the posts.

Chibamba made eight crucial saves to keep his side in the contest, repeatedly denying Senga Young Stars and demonstrating composure well beyond his years.

The teenager displayed sharp reflexes, confidence when dealing with aerial balls and an impressive ability to make saves with his feet — qualities increasingly valued in the modern goalkeeper.

For a player making his senior debut at just 14, Chibamba’s performance offered an early glimpse of his potential.

His display has also prompted calls for the young goalkeeper to be monitored closely by football authorities in Northern Province as he continues his development.

For me, there was little doubt about the standout performer on the day.

Chibamba was my Player of the Match — and judging by the reaction from those who watched the game, plenty of spectators would agree.

The challenge now will be to give the promising youngster the right environment, coaching and opportunities to develop without placing unnecessary pressure on him.

If nurtured carefully, Chibamba could become a goalkeeper to watch in the years ahead.
