Power Dynamos winger Chifundo Mphasi and Kansanshi Dynamos midfielder Francisco Madinga have been called up to the Malawi national team for the Flames’ upcoming 2026 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Malawi head coach Kalisto Pasuwa has named a 31-man squad for the Group B fixtures against South Sudan and Angola, with Mphasi and Madinga among the players selected for the crucial qualifiers.
The Flames will host South Sudan on 25 September before travelling to Angola for their second fixture on 6 October.
The call-ups represent a significant moment for both players, particularly Madinga, who has earned a place in the senior national team setup after establishing himself with Kansanshi Dynamos.
Kansanshi welcomed Madinga’s selection, describing it as a proud moment for the midfielder and the club.
“We are delighted to see Francisco Madinga invited to join the Malawi Senior National Team, the Flames, as they prepare for the upcoming AFCON Qualifiers,” the club said.
“A proud moment for our Malawian international and the Mabanga Boys as he gets the opportunity to be part of the national team’s preparations.”
For Mphasi, the selection adds an international dimension to his campaign with Power Dynamos. The winger is included among the forwards in a squad featuring a mixture of established internationals, locally based players and a number of new faces.
Pasuwa has handed senior national team debuts to five players, including Japan-based Blessings Kanowa, Mexico-based Jorden Kananga, Wales-based Shaquille Gwengwe, Adiel Kaduya of Mustangs University in the United States, as well as locally based Peter Ng’ambi and Ajussa Kalowa.
The squad also includes 19 foreign-based players, with Sacramento Republic FC forward Mayele Malango among those selected. Other overseas-based players include Hannover 96 forward Mwisho Mhango, TP Mazembe’s Patrick Mwaungulu and Newport County’s Gwengwe.
Mozambique-based forwards Richard Mbulu and Babatunde Adepoju have also been included.
The Flames are due to regroup in Lilongwe on Monday, 21 September, to begin preparations for the two qualifiers.
Malawi will be looking to make the most of home advantage against South Sudan before facing a difficult trip to Angola 10 days later.
