Cosafa U20: South Africa win sixth title in Zambia

South Africa bagged their sixth Cosafa U20 title on Saturday afternoon when they beat Lesotho 2 – 1 in the final to win the 2017 Mopani Copper Mines COSAFA Under-20 Championships at the Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe, Zambia on Saturday.

Goals from Lyle Foster and Kamogelo Sambo were enough to settle the tie with Rethabile Mokokoane scoring the consolation for Lesotho with a long range drive.

Guest teams Uganda and Egypt accounted for themselves well in the tournament reaching the semi finals and they played each other for bronze.

Egypt edged the East Africans 3 – 1 to claim third place in the tournament.

It was a tournament to forget for defending champions and hosts Zambia as they were eliminated in the first round with a loss a draw and one win over Swaziland.

Zambia are the current holders of the U20 Africa Cup title but entered the graduated U17 team in the tournament to prepare for the forthcoming U20 Africa Cup qualifiers in 2018 but the lads fell short.

The Player of the Tournament award went to Luvuyo Mkatshana os South Africa, while Muhammad Shaban of Uganda claimed the Golden Boot with four goals.

Monaheng Ramalefane was named the Goalkeeper of the Tournament, while Lesotho picked up the Fair Play Award.
