Zesco, Nkana favourites to clinch transitional league title
The 2019 Super League season will kick off on the 27th of January and it will be a short version as the Football Association of Zambia looks to have it concluded by June. This has been done so as to have a new league season that will kick off in August 2019 and align with the new CAF Calendar which will run from August to May.
The 20 teams were divided in two sets of ten and will play separate leagues but at the end of the season the top teams from both streams will face off in a play-off to decide the Champions. The top two teams in each stream will represent the country in CAF competitions.
Defending Champions, Zesco United will lead stream A while Nkana lead stream B as the favourites for the transitional league title. Only six days fans will be trooping to the Stadiums to watch the action and visiting betting sites to place their bets.
The two teams, Nkana and Zesco United are currently active in CAF Confederation Cup hence they will start the season with an upper hand in terms of preparedness having being playing competitive football.
In Stream A, Zesco United will have stiff competition from Green Buffaloes and Sensational Zanaco. The Zambia Army sponsored side finished third in 2018 and went on to play in the CAF confederation cup being eliminated in the first round by Tunisian Side CS Cfaxien.
The bankers on the other hand finished sixth on the log but after acquisition of new signings and changes administratively they look set to push for the title or at least a top two finish. Legendary cup fighters Mighty Mufurila Wanderers will through their hat in the race but it will be a stretch to expect them to peep the other teams to the top of Stream A at the end of the season.
In stream B Nkana and their cross town rivals Power dynamos are the favourites to finish top at the end of week 18. The Beston Chambeshi coached Nkana have only lost once in their last 27 games in all competitions and look strong.
Choma based Green Eagles are the third favourites in this stream as they look to continue their upward progression following their successful 2018 season which saw them qualify to the CAF Confederation Cup for the very first time.
A day prior to the season kicking off Nkana and Zesco United will go head to head in the Samuel ‘Zoom’ Charity shield, the traditional curtain raiser for the Zambia Super League.
Will Zesco United defend their crown or Nkana will finally make it 13 titles or maybe another team will step up? These are questions that will only be answered after week 18 for now the fans will wait patiently for the action on the pitch.
