Zambia beats Cameroon to finish 2nd in Pre-CHAN Tournament
Pre CHAN Tournament: Zambia 2 – 0 Cameroon ( C Sikombe 48′, Z Chilongoshi 60′)
The Zambia national soccer team on Thursday evening beat hosts Cameroon 2 – 0 to end the Pre-CHAN tournament in second position.
Zambia were deserving winners as they dominated play and got the two important goals in the second half through Collins Sikombe and defender Zechariah Chilongoshi who scored his first ever goal for the Chipolopolo.
Coach Milutin Sredojević started with a familiar back four marshaled by skipper of the side Adrian Chama while the midfield had Kelvin Kapumbu at the base with Benson Sakala and Paul Katema playing just ahead of him.
He played Moses Phiri and Emmanuel Chabula as split strikers with Sikombe in the hole.
Zambia played with urgency and looked like they wanted it more than the hosts.
The Chipolopolo could have gone ahead in the 13th minute when Chabula won the ball with a high press but failed to find the mark after going one on one with the goalkeeper.
Two minutes later it was Moses Phiri who turned on the edge of the box to unleash a shot that beat the Cameroon goalkeeper only to come off the crossbar.
Cameroon were looking to catch Zambia on the counter attack but Lameck Siame in the Zambia goal was alert to their most dangerous runs.
After the break, Zambia made good of the chances created. Sikombe curled one past the on-rushing goalkeeper three minutes after the restart benefiting from a cross on the right before Zechariah Chilongoshi smashed one from outside the box from a short corner in the 60th minute.
Zambia had opportunities to extend the lead firstly through Sikombe who saw his volley inside the box just miss the target before substitute Albert Kangwanda failed take advantage of a ball that fell sharply to him in the 75th minute.
The win sees Zambia pick the first win at the tournament which moves them to four points having drawn with Niger and lost to Uganda.
The Cranes finish top with seven points while Zambia finishes second despite being level on points with Niger who also have points as the Chipolopolo have a better goal difference.
The hosts finish bottom with only a point to show for their efforts.
