Jackson Were scored two second half goals as Zesco United beat Kitwe United 2 – 1 to go eight points clear on top of the log.
It was a lucklustre performance by the champions who were not looking sharp on the day despite creating numerous chances as they struggled to stamp their authority on the game in an empty Trade Fair Grounds Stadium.
Lazarous Kambole was finding space in the final third but twice failed to convert under the watchful eye of Moses Lolozi while Mwape Mwelwa looked sharp.
But the goals only came later in the match when Were scored in the 77th minute when he finished off from inside the box after his penalty was saved by Lameck Siame in the Kitwe United goal.
He scored the second in the 90th minute off an Enock Sabamukama assist when he controlled a cross in the box to shoot past the goalkeeper.
The win sees Zesco move to 73 points ahead of second and third placed Nkana and Green Buffaloes respectively who both have 65 points.
Kitwe United scored their goal in the 4th minute of additional time when Jimmy Ndhlovu scored from the penalty spot.
With five games to play, Zesco at the most only need to win three more games to be confirmed as champions.
