Tinkler: Musonda will get his chance

Orlando Pirates coach Eric Tinkler has promised that Zambian striker Mwape Musonda will be given a fair opportunity to showcase his qualities in their remaining games this season.

Musonda finally made his debut on Wednesday night – a month after penning a deal with the Houghton-based club – coming on as a substitute in the 75th minute, in place of Kermit Erasmus, in their 1-1 draw away at Free State Stars last night.

While he didn’t ignite any thrills on what he is all about, Tinkler says they are aware of what the Zambian is capable of and promises he will hand the striker a proper chance.

“Obviously he came on last night with 15 minutes remaining – not a lot of time to be honest, but I felt Kermit [Erasmus] was starting to show fatigue,” says Tinkler.

“And as you are well aware, [Erasmus] was already on three yellow cards so there was that concern, too, that he might pick up the fourth.

“He came into a very difficult game, with 15 minutes to try and do something for us, and he had one chance with a pass from Mpho Makola.

“We know what he is capable of, and judging him on 15 minutes’ performance will be entirely unfair. He has great ability and is a quality striker, and he can shoot with both left and right.

“I am sure he will get his opportunity,” adds the Bucs caretaker coach.

Musonda is faced with tough competition for game time with Erasmus, Lehlohonolo Majoro and Lennox Bacela all standing ahead of him, in a striking department that also still features Helder Pelembe and Thamsanqa Gabuza.
