T was a good team captained by th Magnificent Kalu, n Coached by th best foreign coach to hv ever coached zambia, Roald poulsen. Thy shuld hv won th afcon buh th quality in th naija team was just too much.
Probably 1994 was arguably the most exciting Final involving Zambia. But the older generation fans ( like me ) would say the twice – played 1974 Final was more memorable. But at end of the day, these are soccer milestones for Zambia to cherish Luckson E Mwale
After Litana scored My uncle jumped off the sit dropping my 2 year old niece to the ground. Every one went wild only noticed my niece on the flow crying after calm was restored. I also remember Malitoli weeping like my niece. He really put in a lot you Could see how much he wanted it. I was very young but after that game I become a true chipolopolo fan till this day.
So proud of 94 Zambian team we lost to a very good naija team but we matched them in all depts ,we fought a good fight till the last min, that very year that naija went to become the second african country to reach quater finals USA 94 W/CUP that it self shows the quality we was up against, My highlight would be King Kalu ringing the cross bar with a thunderbolt shot which peter rufyie (sp) naija keeper was well beaten only to saved by cross bar making PELE to stand on his feet and applaud KING KALU’s effort ( Real recognise Real) nice article ZAMFOOT.
Nigeria or Cameroon coz Nigeria are yet to reach their first world cup quarterfinal. Only Cameroon, Senegal and Ghana have reached the quarterfinals of the world cup.
coach was Ian Porterfield, poulsen only drilled the team during the rebuilding process. Went on a wild celebration in the compound after Litanas goal, when I came back to the match it was 1-1.
A giant in what? South africa is the only giant from that region as the rest are not!
With the exception of your fluke afcon cup which of course was missing a chunk of the perennial competitors, what has zambia done in africa football?
Forget about that hogwash argument of qualifying to the finals of that mediocrity tournament and tell us what zambia clubs has done in africa and outside africa!
No zambian club has won champions league bf, has zero africa cup winners cup, i mean zero laurels at that level!
Now, with the exception of the one legged, fluke afcon cup, no zambia junior team has won any laurels at that level too!
Zambia has not win any underage caf competition and hardly even qualifies to participate in these competitions and what kind of a giant is this?
Furthermore, only one zambia player, the lethal, swashbuckling, talented great kalu has won the african best player award since its inception and what kind of a giant is zambia?
Katongo won the bbc award but thats like canal france version
South africa is the only giant from the south and they are more TALENTED THAN ZAMBIA TOO and of course south africa hold the record of PRODUCING THE MOST DEADLY SQUAD from that region tgst ever participated in the afcon… Their 1996 squad was far better than zambia 94 squad as that squad went on to qualified them to the wc something in which zambia 94 squad cldnt do!
You are sick and lacking sight, judgement plus insight in soccer. Mbesuma top scorer to date in psl, Chris Katongo top scorer in the mid of the season also Chamanga where are your statistics.
Coach was the late Ian Porterfield, though in actual fact the team was drilled by Boniface Simutowe, while Porterfield was busy womanizing at Lusaka’s Ridgeway Hotel.
Sadly that great Nigerian son Yekini, went ‘boncus’ and started picking things from the street bins, and died a miserable death.
It was indeed a great final by 2 great teams, captained by 2 great K boys, Keshi.”The Big Boss” and Kalu “the Great”. The team that wanted it most got it.
We all rue the behavior of the late great master dribbler, one Gibby Mbasela. We always debate that if he had not misbehaved, if he had played, if he had not been expelled from camp, if he had been in his mood. If he had…………, whatever.
The result would have been different, but those are what ifs.
In the end Nigeria triumphed. Hope to meet them in another AFCON Cup final one day.
I watched this game when I was young and didn’t even know everyone in the team = surprisingly this game is much more pronounced in my mind than any other game= even more than the latest final we played.
I remember the game very well, was in grade 5 then. I cried after the game and refused to eat supper. My mother, who was not a soccer fan then gave me a serious beating for refusing to eat over a football match.
Tough and no nonsense defender Mordon. The Chipolopolo class of 94 was one of the best.Kalu,Kenneth,Zeddy,Evans Sakala,Litana and Harrison Chongo played games of their lives at this AFCON.
I watched that final in 94 by then I was ten years old.that final was the most ententaing and most interesting I remember Rashid Yekini kneeling down for mordon.
And the sports section of the Times of Zambia Newspaper, the following day, had a photo of Harrison “Wawa” Chongo (In a standing position position) looking over Rashid Yakene (in a kneeling position) and caption was “Just give me a chance to score one goal”. Intense game that was and I think we deserved to win it.
Nice one….now thts one of Zambia’s worst jerseys among many. Was in lower primary then but I remember the vibrations, excitement and emotions it brought. Have never seen a stronger nigerian team than that i must admit.
Kalumthe great tore the Nigerian defence to pieces. The team needed Charles Musonda and Keshi confessed that had that Musonda boy played, Zambia could have carried the day. Kalu laboured and lacked support from the likesmof Charles. Yekini kneeled to Mordon Malitoli. After the match mots Zambian players wept, Mordon, Kenneth Bubble Malitoli, it was so emotional.
Coming to top scorers in tbe Psl, befote Mbesuma, katongo and Chamanga,we had the ‘bullet’ chesa mpama Dennis Lota, prior to that we had Ackson ‘scud’Shimbala from Nchanga Rangers to Kaiser Chiefs, we also had Albert Bwalya. One guy I have forgotten from Ndola United and former clasmate and schoolmate at Chiwala Boys, Ndola. Many more Zambian players have contributed to raising the standard of South african football.
Zambia outplayed nigeria in that final and that nigerian goalkeep made a lot of saves also I remember great kalu hiting the cross bar.mordon malitole had a good game.
Yeah, we have played more finals than South, more semis, more tourneys, and at Club level Power Dynamoes got continental glory long before Orlando Pirates… also won more COSAFAs and other regional tourney… so RSA aren’t even close to a giant. Only fluked ’96 coz they hosted it. They had a good team for almost 5 years and that’s the end in their history. Do your research. Borniface Simutowe drilled the team with Ian Porterfield though in the beginning he started the rejuvination… he left for a short while before returning in 96 i.e. Roald Poulsen. Other members of the team were Aggrey Chiyangi, Evans Sakala and Tenant Chilumba. Not forgetting ‘Bubble’ Malitoli,Happhy Sichikolo and James Phiri
It was so good reaching the final coming after what had happened a year before. Zambia beat Burkina Faso 4-0 and the downed Ivory Coast 1-0 in the semis. Then came the final against the Super Eagles with JJ Okocha, Finidi George and the Bull himself, Daniel Amokachi …… What a final it was!!
Zambia drew the first game against Sierra Leone nil nil and went on to beat Ivory Coast to qualify for the quarter finals.Zambia then beat Mali in the quarter finals by 4 goals to 0 and in the semi finals they won 1 goal to 0 against Senegal in a very tough match .In the finals Zambia went down to Nigeria by 2 goals to 1 in a match Zambia completely dominated in the last 13 minutes with Kalu turning the Nigerian defence upside down and he even hit the crossbar.
It was actually the other way round, we beat Senegal 1-0 in the quarter-finals thanks to Evans Sakala’s spectacular long range strike (although others called speculative) and then thrashed Mali 4-0 in the semi-final (Litana, Saileti, Kalu, Bubble). I was at Unza then and we were a bit fearful of the Malians after they knocked out the hosts Tunisia 2-0 and forked out Egypt in the quarterfinals. In the end, we needn’t have worried as it was a walk in the park.
What a game Kalushya hit the bar from way way out and Nigeria were all at sea in the first half. Sadly , it was not too be… Remember one of the best goal keepers with a quiet and unassuming manner- can’t remember his name ?Davies Phiri- was outstanding … God bless that 1994 unit!!! Helped wash away the tears and help us all believe again!!!
My father watched this game live. He came to tell us a slight wind made Kalus shot hit the post..kikiki.. Awesome AFCON I tell you. Even non soccer fans in my family would cheer.
The day the national team perished I was only a month in my new job as a twenty-something in Ndola I remember vividly I cried as most of the guys who perished were so dear to my heart! Then came the rebuilding process, All Stars vs the rest those coaches Ian Porterfield and Roald Poulsen did the best that has ever been done for Chipolopolo and Zambia. It was Ian Porterfield who took Chipolopolo to Tunisia 1994.
in 1994 afcon final zed lacked the likes of john lungu, while gentile was off form.agrey chiyangi was a bit poras at left back, grory to malitoli brothaz, litana elijah and james phiri.
U are clearly novice on African football. Though I luv yo confidence in showing yo ignorance in public. Power Dynamos won the African Cup Winners Cup in 1991 beating Nigeria’s Enugu Rangers. Nkana reached the final of the Champions league in 1991 and lost on penalties to JS Kabyile from Algeria. Nkana has reached the semi finals of the Champions league a record 4 times. The only one frm ths region with such a record. While Cameroun was the 1st African country to reach the quarter finals of the WC, Zambia was the 1st African country to reach the Quarter finals of the football Olympics in 1988, The year Kalu won the African footballer of the yr award. Zambia is a giant.
You must be Ghanian! Or are you south african? Nkana have won the Caf Champions league you FOOL! In fact back in the day, Nkana and Mighty mufulira wanderers were one of the best clubs in African football. Our 93 squad that died in the plane was our greatest squad ever not the 94 runners up! They competed at the 88 Olympics where they finished 5th and gave 4 time world champions Italy a 4-0 bashing. They going to qualify for the 94 world cup if you don’t know as they led the group and were on their way to Senegal. The were better players (arguably) than Kalu in that plane like the great king Ucar Chitalu who scored 107 in a calendar year (yes, more than Messi) for both club and country. You foreigners only know Kalu coz he won African player and as for you judging by your luck of knowledge about history in African football. You probably about 20 yrs or so or you never followed football well at that time. You clearly hate Zambia too. A team that loses it’s whole squad and coaching staff in a plane crash with only two to three players like Kalu that weren’t on the plane surviving, still manages to make another strong team months before the afcon and goes all the way to the final yet you here busy boasting of South Africa having more talent! South Africa who’s history only starts in the 1990’s and have been the biggest flops of African football ever since, boasting of players like Benni MaCarthy, Steven Pienaar and even Quinten Fortune but can’t get past the group stages at afcon. Go to hell hater! Zambia won the afcon whether you like it or not, fluke or no fluke and we deserved to considering the number of afcons we’ve participated in and our respectable history! Even Wikipedia calls us the best African national team that didn’t win the competition before that. We also the best and most experienced yet to participate at the world cup! Check your history before you talk shit IDIOT!
Cool down Peter they were not there. Do they know about Alex Chola aka computer Africas Greatest winger. Alex mentored great Kalu at mufulira blackpool.kenneth ‘bubble’ malitoli mordon brother tormented the west east north and south teams when he played for esperence fc and nkana.ask bruce grobbeler .its true check your history again all you critics
@ Idi amin al gaddafi, after reading your stupid comments I realized how foolish you are. Anyway, pansaka tapabula icipuba (There is always a fool amongst the council meeting)
What a game that was. Our right back let us down big time but such games are lost on lapse in concentration. Two goals from the same wing. Still no hard feelings.
Zambia is a top footballing nation. NO DEBATE

Keshi was a non-playing captain and never featured. Augustine Eguavone if my memory serves me right captained the team on the night.

I have watched the game on DVD coz I was born january that year, too bad we lost after leading by a goal from elijah litana zoona

Zed Saileti cost us the game He was referred to as jelly legs for failing to score with clear chances…..mamamamama!
Kalu, hit the post that day, some Nigerians said God was Nigerian. To this day that goal post in Tunisia is still shaking (Inyankanya)

What a game that was. Our right back let us down big time but such games are lost on lapse in concentration. Two goals from the same wing. Still no hard feelings.
Zambia is a top footballing nation. NO DEBATE
