At club level he started playing for Mufulira Blackpool as a 16-year-old and scored on his debut in 1979.
At international level, he debuted against Sudan in April 1983 at Dag Hammarskjoeld Stadium in a Cup of Nations qualifier in Ndola, and scored his first goal against Uganda in a World Cup qualifier the following year at the same venue.
He was Chipolopolo head coach from 2003 to 2006 and on 5 September 2004, Zambia played Liberia, and the match was tied 0–0 minutes before the end.With the striking partnership of Dudley Fichite, Collins Mbesuma and Jacob Mulenga faltering, Kalu pulled his boots on and with a short warm-up pulled out Fichite for himself in the 68th minute with crowd chanting his name. He scored from a free kick with virtually the last kick of the game in 91st minute to give Zambia a 1 – 0 victory at age 41.
Great Kalu’s Zambia National Team last Game was COSAFA Cup Final, against Angola, on 20 November 2004 at Independence Stadium which saw him miss a penalty with fans later hauling insults at him as Zambia lost the cup on post match penalties.
