The league is more important to me than the golden boot- Patson Daka

The Zambia national team striker believes winning the title is more important to him than becoming the league’s top goalscorer.

Daka,21, has scored 23 goals so far in the Austrian Bundesliga and is just two goals behind current leading goalscorer, Shon Zalman Weissman a player he has a lot of respect for.

Salzburg this afternoon face Weissman’s club Wolfsberger AC and Patson is expecting a tough match not only from the leading goalscorer but the whole team.

“Shon Weissman is an incredibly good footballer, and I am amazed by his instinct in front of goal. He is also on a decent run. It will be difficult to catch him, but nothing is impossible. The league title is much more important to me than finishing top goalscorer though,“ Daka told the club’s official website.

“If the top scorers in the league are facing one another, then it definitely should be a good game. Asides from us I am also expecting a high-quality match today. Wolfsberg is a very good team with young hungry players and some very experienced guys. We need to make another very concentrated start and try to impose our own game on them from the word go.”

The Zambian talisman has managed 26 strikes and contributed 8 assists in 39 matches in all competitions. In the league, he has managed 23 goals and 4 assists in just 25 games.

However, of the 25 games, he has only finished 6 games, being substituted out of a match 10 times and substituted into a match 9 times meaning he has only played 1420 minutes out of a possible 2250 plus minutes.

This means in the league the Kafue Celtic product averages a goal every 56.8 minutes he is on the pitch while former teammate Erling Braut Haaland averaged a goal every 61 minutes.

“Of course these kinds of statistics mean something as strikers are gauged by these kinds of numbers. It makes me proud that I am on a good scoring run at the moment as I can help my team, and the goals and the victories are the rewards for all the work we have put in together,” he said.

In the last seven league games, Daka has scored nine goals and contributed one assist and has scored in four consecutive games since the league resumed.

When he scored his second goal against TSV Hartberg, Daka became the first Zambian to score 20 league goals or more for a European club surpassing Mwape Miti’s 19 goals scored in the 2003/04 season for Danish side Odense Boldklub.

This evening he has a chance to add to his impressive tally when Salzburg travels to Wolfsberg for the clash against Wolfsberger AC at the Lavanttal Arena.
