TBT: 2012 AFCON WINNER – Kalililo Kakonje
The towering goalkeeper came to stardom at Lusaka Dynamos before he went on loan to Power Dynamos.
Kali as he mates fondly calls him went on to play for Golden Arrows and Amazulu in South Africa alongside another Zambia great Davies Phiri.
The 34-year-old also had an unsuccessful spell at TP Mazembe.
On the international scene, the Kabwata bred goalkeeper was part of the famed Peter Kaumba’s Zambia Under-23 which also had the likes of Noel Mwandila, Newa Mwewa, Stephen Kunda, Billy Mwanza, Songwe Chalwe, Chris Katongo, Sipho Mumbi and Collins Mbesuma.
In 2004, he was handed the Chipolopolo first-choice goalkeeping role but didn’t last long as he was displaced by a former State Lodge FC striker.
After the heartbreak of missing out on the 2006 AFCON squad, Kakonje went on make 2008, 2010, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2015 African Cup of Nations squads.
Despite being at 6 AFCON finals, Kakonje never played a game for Zambia.
His memorable moment was when Zambia lifted the trophy in Gabon in 2012.
The 34-year-old is currently the goalkeeping coach at Red Arrows.
