Player Ratings: Botswana 1-0 Zambia
The Zambia national team on Monday suffered a 1-0 loss in Francis town at the hands of the Zebras of Botswana in a very uninspiring match of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
Former South Africa PSL side TS Galaxy midfielder Mosha Gaolaolwe scored the only goal of the game in the 6th minute thanks to a defensive mix up.
The ZamFoot Crew now looks at individual players and their contributions to the team and the poor performance.
Botswana 1-0 Zambia
Sebastian Mwenge 5/10- He was good with handling and distributing the ball on all occasions.
He had pulled off a good save at his near post just before he conceded and did well to parry one looping ball out.
Khodwani Chiboni 4/10- Did little wrong in defense but did even less to help the attack. This is the type of game he needed to show his attacking prowess as the Midfield was compact and the wide areas were the outlets.
Zechariah Chilongoshi 5/10 – He worked hard going up and down the left-wing. He was Zambia’s most effective outlet in the wide areas however he could have done more in delivering quality crosses.
Tandi Mwape 5/10- He was calm and collected on the ball. Always looking to start play from the back. He was however easily dwarfed when it came to aerial balls. He put in a really good Shift.
Luka Banda 3/10 – For his height, he should have won more balls in the air but was always second best allowing the strikers space for free headers. He was at fault for a miscued clearance that beat Kapumbu for Botswana’s goal.
He lacked confidence and composure.
Kelvin Kapumbu 4/10 – He found himself playing too deep and seemed to be the fifth man in defense. He failed to dictate play from the deep areas. He needed to show some qualities of a deep-lying playmaker and could have done more to influence the game.
Enock Mwepu 5/10- He showed his class but failed to thrive in a congested midfield. He worked hard for the team both in attack and when defending. Ghampani Lungu found him with a cross into the box late in the game but he failed to hit the target.
Klings Kangwa 2/10 – He could have just kept his game simple by playing one-twos but he wanted to take players on ended him in traffic and nothing came off with creativity.
Collins Sikombe 3/10- He was poor on the day. Failed to find the space to run in but also had a lot of misplaced passes in the game. He still could not affect the game when he dropped into the holding role in midfield.
Lubambo Musonda 4/10- The skipper worked hard both in attack and in defense. He let the cross come in for the goal when he was defending deep. He should have been the player to stretch the compact Zebra’s defense-wide, but he failed to thrive on the wing or in the half-spaces.
Fashion Sakala 2/10- He played as the lone striker in the first half with no returns. He did not trouble his marker enough, no take-on, no runs. Early in the second half he was played through by Shonga but tumbled to the ground when he should have hit the target and later squandered Zambia’s best chance when his effort came off the cross-bar.
Justin Shonga 5/10- He changed the complexion of the game going forward when he came on. He was finding spaces in and around the edge of the box and trying to find his co-strikers.
Ghampani Lungu 5/10- His coming in at right-back, he was running the show on the right and defended well when called exemplified with a last-ditch tackle in the box late in the game that saw him pluck the ball off the striker who was headed for goal
Emmanuel Chabula 3/10- Did very little to influence the game. Nothing much of note
Kelvin Kampamba 3/10- He played too far away from the box where he is most dangerous. His set-pieces were not on point. His long throw into the box which found Kelvin Kapumbu was Zambia’s best chance of the game
Bruce Musakanya – N/A
Coach Micho 5/10
In a game where we needed creativity and a Strong number 9, He would have started Kelvin Mubanga who has been Zambia’s best player, and Emmanuel Chubula who is a fox in the box.
His Substitutions had no impact on the game and must do more to make sure we start games on a good note.
