Peter Makoni- A young defender fixed on breaking through the Red Arrows ranks
Football keeps changing every day but producing better and improved youth players remains a constant for as long as the sport remains a result-oriented affair.
Zambia Airforce sponsored side Red Arrows have a number of feeder clubs and introduced Young Red Arrows just a few years ago to make sure they can groom the next generation of players to come and fill the shoes of legends like Danny Hangunyu, Daniel Sibanda, Lubinda Mundia and captain Bruce Musakanya.
The ZamFoot Crew today looks at one of the best upcoming center backs in the country, Peter Makoni who is a product of the Arrows system and is currently on the books of Blue Arrows, One of Red Arrows feeder clubs.
The lanky defender is very strong, quick, and comfortable on the ball and is also quite good in the air.
Like many others before him, Growing up Makoni used to play football in the streets of Lusaka and got inspired by former Manchester United defender Nemanje Vidic.
His first organized football step was in 2012 when he decided to join Chiparamba Breakthrough Academy where he took his first steps towards developing his career.
His first year at Chiparamba Breakthrough saw the young defenders’ potential get noticed and was selected to travel with the team to Sweden to play in the Gothia Cup boys 18 which saw Chiparamba reaching the quarter-finals.
Peter spent 4years at Chiparamba from 2012 to 2016. In 2016 he was encouraged by his sister to attend trials for Young Red Arrows which he did and was picked and was later made captain at Young Red Arrows under the tutelage of coach Boyd Simutowe.
A year later, Makoni was sent on loan to FQM Roads FC where he spent two seasons and was selected for National duty at U-17 level although he did not play any game. In 2019 he returned to Red Arrows where he joined the reserve team coached by Lombe Kaluba.
This year Makoni is with Zambia Air Force sponsored outfit Blue Arrows reuniting with his former coach at Young Red Arrows Boyd Simutowe.
Peter Makoni like any other young footballer has a dream to make it big in the game and dreams of one day playing for Red Arrows Football Club’s main team with Zanaco and Zesco United as other viable options.
Makoni also has a dream of playing in South Africa for Kaizer Chiefs and in Europe, he would love to play for Spanish giants Barcelona.
