Full-Time Scores,
National Assembly WFC 1-2 Red Arrows WFC (Emeldah Kasonde 49′ | Ochumba Lubandji Oseke 44′, Aliness Kasoma 90+4′)
Red Arrows Women Football Club started the new season off to a good note edging National Assembly Women Football Club 2-1 in a scintillating encounter.
Aliness Kasoma scored a late winner in a dramatic ending of the opening match in the 2023/24 Zambian Women’s Super Division match week one encounter played at Bank of Zambia Sports Complex Ground in Lusaka.
Arrows headed into this match as favourites to pick up maximum points having been a better side over Assembly who have only won once in encounters involving the two teams in the last 5 years.
Arrows who are now coached by Daniel Sibanda deployed almost a similar line up to the one that defeated Assembly 2-1 in the last meeting between the two teams last season while his opposite counterpart, Gibby Chimbalanga mixed a blend of new players with old ones making this tie even more exciting to watch.
Both teams started on a high note and it was clear the match was going to be an interesting one and true to this fact it was end to end stuff the entire match.
Arrows’ first real chance came in the 13th minute when Ochumba Lubandji’s effort went inches away from Assembly’s goal mouth.
Arrows introduced Aliness Kasoma also known as Make Rose for debutant Deborah Kambwili in the 38th minute and Kasoma quickly got involved in the game proving to be a thorn in Assembly’s half.
Both teams kept piling pressure on each other but could not create clear cut chances until Ochumba managed to beat the offside trap slotting home past Milika Banda in the 44th minute becoming the first player to score this season and her goal was the difference going into the break.
After the resumption, Assembly came back as a changed side and it only took them 4 minutes to level the scores through striker Emeldah Kasonde who pounced on a loose ball after Arrows goalkeeper Dainess Kasoka failed to handle a cross inside the 18 yard box.
Assembly kept pushing for another goal introducing the likes of Gladys Shakalupa for Sheila Munali but they failed to be clinical missing what could have been a winning goal towards the closing stages of the game after Arrows goalkeeper was beaten only for skipper of the side Fikile Xhosa to deny Assembly by clearing the ball on the line.
On the other hand, Arrows brought in Teseliya Zulu for Mary Mulenga in their search for a second goal and it was after this moment that The Air Ladies managed 4 corners in succession compared to 3 in favour of Assembly in the entire match.
Just when everyone thought spoils will be shared with only 4 additional minutes remaining Assembly made a late change Ruth Balele came on for Susan Mwansa to try and stabilise the midfield.
Ochumba then turned from goalscorer to provider as she set up a pass to substitute Aliness Kasoma who lobbed Assembly goalkeeper Milika Banda with literally the last kick of the match in the stoppage time breaking Assembly’s hearts making it 2-1 to Arrows and that was it for the day as Ochumba and Aliness continues to dominate the goalscoring chat against Assembly.
Action continues this afternoon with five matches taking centre stage.
