Mweene loses first team position at Sundowns

Chipolopolo first choice goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene has lost his first team position at PSL Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane says Denis Onyango is the first-choice goalkeeper at Chloorkop for now.

Mweene has not started any match for Mosimane’s side since his return from the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Equatorial Guinea.

“Onyango is playing now,” Mosimane says. “Let him show that he wants to stay like that. Let him fight for his position.

“Every position is up for grabs. Let him fight and if he convinces he will keep the position and if not somebody must take it,” Mosimane told kickoff.

Besides Mweene, the Brazilians also boast former Bafana Bafana keeper Wayne Sandilands in reserve.

The experienced goalkeepers lack of game time will be a major concern for Zambia as the team kicks off the World cup campaign in June this year.

  1. Sundowns have only played two games so far so it’s kind of two early to start talking about him losing his position, perhaps the coach just wanna give him some time to recover as there are still more games to be played, anyhow he just need to continue working hard so that he’s back to playing as quick as possible.

  2. Screw this club, I don’t even know why Zambian players signup for this useless club that is know destroying Zambian talent. This useless club will never win anything on the continent.Mxxm

  3. Sundowns have always been like that! They will sign a player today and just after 2 seasons the player will be subjected to bench warmIng and someone else will be brought in to take over and this also applies to S African players, so when a play signs for this club he should be prepared mentally for this kind of treatment! I have seen some players who have withstood the pressure but to many it means the downward spiral of their careers!

  4. I don’t think Mweene will get his number 1 goalkeeper. Downdowns are knon of finishing players. He had a chance and he got game time on the other hand football has no permanent position. To be frank, Mweene has lost form

  5. To me no matter what others may say, Sundowns is the worst club in the PSL when it comes to finishing players. This club has a “We don’t care attitude towards players they sign” because they have the money. Very sad. However Mweene just needs to work extra hard. Thats the only way he can get back to first team.

  6. Anyone who has seen Denis Onyango play for Uganda and even for Sundowns knows that he is a top quality goalkeeper and in my opinion there is nothing to choose between them. Onyango is yet to concede a goal in the games he has played this season. If the truth be told, Mweene has been in decline for the past couple of years. he no longer looks assured and my opinion is that age is catching up with him. My suspicion is that Mweene is much older than his official age.

  7. Keepers always improve with age. If Mweene feels undone let him just move elsewhere or fight for his position.
Its a big worry for us if our first choice goal keeper can’t play regular football. As for Onyango or whoever it is, lets not compare the two because they did not play under the same conditions. All we know is that Kennedy has won the Best Pair of Hands in Africa and the AFCON itself, which I think this other guy has never achieved yet. Not even in his dreams. but the coach at Kennedy’s club has the prerogative to use whoever he wants. Its just worrying for us Zambian soccer fans. I would prefer he moves elsewhere.

  8. this guy is finished. he coasted us not to go to world cup against ghana by allowing silly goal from afar. its high time we use munyao and other good keepers in zambia.
