Mutapa describes COSAFA U-17 Championships as a great tournament
Zambia Under-17 National Team Coach Osward Mutapa described the just ended 2019 COSAFA U-17 Men’s Championship is great.
Mutapa went on to say it was an important opportunity for young players to develop their skills.
“The tournament was great and it’s always important to give opportunities to young boys to develop their skills and this is one of them. We saw even the Women’s Under-17 it’s an opportunity for Girls and Boys to develop their skills,” he said
Speaking in an interview from Blantyre, Malawi Mutapa said the final match was tough but his boys were Physically Stronger than their opponents and that helped them
“The final was a great game. The first half was 50-50 but I again we had a chance to score in the first half but we didn’t,” he said.
“In the second half we knew Mozambique had put in their all in the first half and there was no way they were going to challenge us in the second half. Our boys were physically very fit, you could tell from the way they played even when we were a man down we controlled the game and scored a second goal from there it was game over.”
He further said being Champions is as a result of great preparations they underwent.
“We are happy to be Champions. We did a lot, preparations were massive and it could be seen from the results that we have had.”
Despite playing the last quarter of the natch with a man less after Peter Chikola was sent off, his side managed to hold on their own and managed to overcome the Young Mambas by adding a second goal as they applied their technical abilities by knocking the ball around and made them run and in the end got tired.
“In football, you have to train your boys even when you a man less. We have exercises were we use the other team is more than the other, but you use your technical ability if you saw from the game we denied them the ball. We had the ball more than Mozambique because if we had allowed them to be more on the ball it was going to be a problem. What we did was we opened up the pitch and pushed out passes made them run and we killed the game by scoring the second goal.”
Two second-half goals from player of the Match Joseph Banda and Red Hot midfielder Rickson Ng’ambi were enough to seal the Junior Chipolopolo’s 2-nil victory over the Young Mambas in an exciting final match played at Mpira Stadium to be crowned as 2019 COSAFA U-17 Men’s Champions while Angola settled for Bronze Medals after they silenced Eswatini 5-nil in the 3rd and 4th Play-Off.
