Luyando Foundation and BUSA monopolize the inaugural annual Challenge Cup
Luyando Foundation and Bauleni United Sports Academy (BUSA ) dominated the highly anticipated inaugural Annual Girls Challenge Cup that was hosted in Bauleni on Saturday.
The one-day event attracted interest from several Lusaka Women’s sides like Pataaki, YASA, Luyando, and Football Chance. The tournament which purely focused on Girls Empowerment and Safe Spaces to unleash potential through football was hosted at Prince Takamado and Kanjema Grounds.
Kanyama based Luyondo Foundation and the hosts BUSA dominated the event as they scooped several individual and team awards with Luyando Foundation winning the U-12 Category and coming out as runners up with one of their two senior teams coming out as runners up in the Senior category and their head coach Bernard Mwape Chisenga named as coach of the tournament.
BUSA legends led by Copper Queens midfielder Mary Mwakapila clinched the senior category with the U-14 coming out as runners up.
The U-12 Category saw Luyando Foundation dominating as the two teams they entered came out tops in the groups and went all the way to reach the final facing each other.
Luyando I led by the skillful ‘Maradona’ beat Luyando II to lift the trophy, medals, and a cash prize of K1500 with the other Luyando walking away with K1000.
In the U-14 category, All-Stars led by the prolific Diana Banda beat BUSA 2-0 to walkway with K2000 a trophy, and gold medals while BUSA walked away with K1500 as runners up.
The senior category saw Shining Stars mostly made up of Green Eagles players captained by U-20 national team midfielder Loveness Malunga drawn in group A with Luyando Foundation I ( mostly made up of the current crop of players with the addition of the prolific Square Maiwase), BUSA legends and Pataaki while Group B saw BUSA I (the current crop of players), YASA, Football Chance and Luyando II (mostly made up former and current Nkwazi Queens players).
In Group A Luyando Foundation I came out top with BUSA legends as runners up while YASA topped group B with Luyando II as runners up.
In the semifinals, Luyando Foundation II narrowly edged Luyando I 1-0 thanks to a Towera Nkhata strike while in the other match BUSA legends beat YASA 4-3 on penalties to set up a thrilling final.
The final was full of end-to-end stuff but in the end, BUSA legends came out victorious on post-match penalties.
Nkwazi Queens and U-20 midfield ace Towera Nkhata was named player of the tournament ahead of Square Maiwase and Evarine Susan Katongo who came out second and third respectively.
