Legend Christopher Katongo: A complete player
Christopher Katongo’s name is well inscribed in Zambian football history and will live long after he is gone.
The 37-year old is the first and only player to have lead Zambia to an AFCON title as captain of the side. In 2012 when the Copper Bullets conquered the continent, Katongo was the captain, an inspiration and went on to be named as player of the tournament.
He also went on to win the BBC’s African Footballer of the Year award in 2012, winning just over 40% of the public vote.
Aside from his role in the 2012 triumph Katongo always came up with special performances to help the Chipolopolo Boys. Key to his success is his high work-rate, physical strength, mental strength, and leadership qualities.
Katongo has had a club career spanning over 15 years while representing Zambia for about 12 years.
In 2004, Katongo joined South African side Jomo Cosmos where he became 2007 top scorer on 15 goals midway through the season; having signed for Danish side Brondby. No one could outscore him in the second half of the season despite not playing a game in the second stanza of the season.
Katongo went on to play two(2) seasons in Germany for Arminia Bielefeld, a season at Greek side Skoda Xanthi and three(3) seasons with Chinese Super League side Henan Construction, before heading back to South Africa in 2014, to join Bidvest Wits, following a short 4 months stint with Golden Arrows.
At the international level, Katongo debuted in 2003, and went on to score a historic hatrick beat Bafana Bafana 3-1 and consequently qualify Zambia to the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.
His heroics got him promoted from Corporal to Sergeant Officer. He had a successful international career featuring at the five Africa Cup of Nations tournaments (2006,2008,2010,2012 and 2013).
He has scored 23 goals for the Copper Bullets including seven at Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
