Kalunga talks season in Portugal, National team debut and a possible move
Zambian winger Kenneth Kalunga scored the only goal of the game as Benfica Castelo Branco beat Ideal by a lone goal in a Portuguese Campeonato de Portugal Prio encounter over the weekend.
The match was his first after returning to the starting 11 after a knock that ruled him out for three games.
On the day of the match, Saturday was actually his father’s birthday and his parents were with him on holiday. They watched the match as he scored the winner.
The ZamFoot Crew caught up with the 2017 U-20 AFCON winner to talk about his season in Portugal.
Kalunga says the season has been good despite suffering two short term injuries.
Kalunga went on to talk about his best and worst game so far in the season.
“The season has been good so far. Despite suffering two short term injuries,” he said.
“My best game was against Santarém when I scored and assisted to help the team win 3-2 away from home in a derby.
And the worst was probably against Anadia. It was a bad game not only for me but the whole team,” he added.
The former Gomes player is targeting scoring and assisting more goals this season than last.
“Yes, I have targets that I want to achieve. The main one is to have more goals and assists than last season. That would be a good sign that I’m improving as a player. As a team, we want to be in the playoff spot by the end of the season.”
Kalunga who was an integral part of the 2017 U-20 AFCON winning squad believes his senior national team debut is not far off.
“National team debut? Of course. It’s everyone’s dream to represent their country at the highest level. I look forward to it and I believe it’s only a matter of time before it happens,” Kalunga told the ZamFoot Crew.
Kalunga also revealed that a number of first league teams have made inquiries about him following his good performances.
“Inquiries have been made to my agency by first league clubs that are monitoring my progress.”
Kalunga has so far scored three goals in all Competitions in nine games and is looking to improve on the tally as he aims to help his side to the playoffs.
