Nchanga Rangers followed up their 2 – 1 midweek win over Lusaka Dynamos with a 1 – 0 victory over Green Buffaloes on Saturday to move to within three points of leaders Nkana who are away at Lusaka Tigers on Sunday.
Kabeya Mulume, provider of both assists in his side’s midweek win, scored the only goal of the match to take the Chingola outfit to nine points from five matches.
The result meant that Green Buffaloes dropped from sixth to ninth position with five points.
At Godfrey Chitalu Stadium in Kabwe, Kabwe Warriors turned on the style as they defeated Mufulira Wanderers 3 – 1 thanks to two quick fire goals inside the opening ten minutes by Jacob Phiri and a second half goal by Josephat Kasusu. Taonga Bwembya scored the consolation goal for the visitors.
With the victory, Kabwe Warriors became only the fifth side to score at least three goals against Wanderers since the Mufulira-based outfit returned to the Super League last season joining Zesco United, Zanaco, Nchanga Rangers and Nkana.
The defeat for Wanderers was also their second in ten outings, their previous loss having come in the 3 – 0 to Nkana on November 1.
And Spencer Sautu scored his second goal of the campaign when his netted in the seventh minute to lift Green Eagles off the bottom of the league standings into thirteenth position with four points.
At Kachofa Stadium, Mufulira Blackpool collected their second consecutive point of the campaign with a goalless draw against Nakambala Leopards.
In the weekend’s top bill between Power Dynamos and Red Arrows, it was the former who emerged victorious thanks to Martin Phiri’s goal in the 78th minute to end a two match winless streak for Tenant Chilumba’s men.
Power Dynamos wasted several chances in front of goal with Govenda Simwala and Kelvin Kampamba hitting the woodwork with their efforts.
Red Arrows goalkeeper Danny Munyao was also in inspired form and denied Emmanuel Chimpinde, Billy Mutale and Luka Lungu who wasted close range efforts.
Power Dynamos assistant coach Anderson Phiri said his players were focused on collecting maximum points following disappointing results against Zesco United and Nchanga Rangers.
“We got back together and showed the commitment to win after losing two games. Those losses were a wake up call and the players learnt from them. I don’t think they were going to be complacent in this match. We needed this win, that is all we needed this afternoon,” said Phiri.
Phiri who has come under fire from fans along with his boss Tenant Chilumba was diplomatic in his response when asked whether the victory had eased the pressure on the technical team.
“When you lose the coaches are on the chopping board, when you win it is the players who have done a recommendable job,” he said.
League action continues on Sunday with a double header at Independence Stadium where Nkwazi will entertain Napsa Stars in the lunch time kick off before promoted Lusaka Tigers match up with leaders Nkana.
