It was not easy to make it to the final squad – Avell Chitundu

Copper Queens winger Avell Chitundu is ecstatic to have made the final squad for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup especially that the provisional squad was full of quality making it a competitive group ahead of the announcement of the final squad.

Chitundu is part of the 23 member FIFA Women’s World Cup final squad named by coach Bruce Mwape.

The ZESCO Ndola Girls player wants to work hard to return to the starting line up after missing a few games in the recent past.

“It was not easy to make it to the final squad, there was some tough competition, hence I just want to thank the almighty God. I’m very happy to make it,” she said.

“I need to work extra hard because I have not played in some games. At the World Cup we will play tough games.”

The Copper Queens will conclude their European camp with an international friendly match against Germany after losing to the Republic of Ireland 3-2 and holding Switzerland to a 3-3 draw.

“The game against Germany is very big but we are ready to face any team. We know it’s a big game and we just have to try,” Chitundu said.

“We will be facing tough opponents but as people say, success is behind fear, so we just have to go behind that fear and have the success of winning games.”

“We should continue working hard and take every game seriously.

“I want to say thank you to the fans, you guys are the best,” she added.

Placed in Group C, alongside Spain, Japan, and Costa Rica, Zambia will step onto the global stage on July 22, 2023, against the formidable team from Japan. Four days later, they will face Spain, followed by a clash with Costa Rica on July 31, 2023.
