Grant eyes double over Lesotho

Zambia National Team head coach Avram Grant has set his sights on maximum points this afternoon as the Chipolopolo and the Likuena go head to head.

Grant reiterated his earlier sentiments of AFCON qualification being the target and hence collecting three points against Lesotho this afternoon being of utmost importance.

The Israeli gaffer says he wants to take Zambian football to better heights than it is currently.

“Our target is to qualify for the AFCON. We need three points. We showed strong mentality coming from a goal down. We won against a difficult team to break down, we won 3-1, we could have even scored more,” he said.

“I love this continent, I have been coming here for about 30 years. I was with Ghana and we reached the final and lost on penalties. Now a big challenge with Zambia, People love football, very nice people, our target is to make Zambian football better than it is now and my long term target is taking Zambia to the World Cup but for now we settle for winning the game tomorrow and qualifying to AFCON.”

“The squad is good with good players who are keen to progress and sacrifice for the country and as you saw in the game they showed good character but am a guy who always looks to do better and we have a gap to do even better,” he added.

Grant went on to say he does not care where the player is based but once the final squad is announced they all have to play their part in the team.

Zambia beat Lesotho 3-1 on Thursday thanks to a Lameck Banda brace and a goal from Fashion Sakala and Grant feels it will be difficult to play them again in the space of just three days.

“When I name a squad I don’t care where the players come from, England, Tanzania, Indonesia they all have to give their contribution,” he said.

“It’s not a secret yes we want to have more players in Europe where the level is higher but what is important is proving yourself with the National Team.

It’s difficult to play against the same team twice in three days, it’s difficult for them and us.”

“The most important is to progress, we qualified for U-20 but didn’t do well . I believe in moving step by step as long as we move forward,” he added.

Kick off at the Dobsonville Stadium in Johannesburg South Africa is set at 15:00 hrs Central African Time.

Zambia are currently second in group H with six points and just a point adrift of log leaders, Ivory Coast.
