FAZ Supremo proud of Women’s national teams
Zambia women national teams lost two finals on Sunday, The U20 lost 2-1 to Tanzania in the final of the inaugural COSAFA U20 Women’s Cup while the senior team suffered a one-nil loss to South Africa in the final of the senior COSAFA Women’s Cup.
Despite the losses, the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) President Andrew Kamanga is proud of the girls and their achievements.
“As an executive, we are very proud of the achievement of our girls. The U20 made it to the finals in their first attempt. Our Senior Women have been making strides in the last few years and now look ready to get to the next stage,” Kamanga told FAZ Media.
“Some of the efforts being made by our women have been shown in the few that have been signed up by European clubs. We have no doubt more will follow in their footsteps.”
A lot of positives have been picked from the tournament. For the U20 it was one of the best-assembled sides and one can say the future is bright. For the women’s national team, it is the best ever performance in the Cosafa women’s championship as they earned silver medals to go with the three previous bronze medals they have.
“Faz executive was proud of the achievement of the girls, the U20 made it to the finals at their first attempt, the senior team have also been making strides in the last few years and now look ready to go to the next stage.”
Further, the executive said it can be seen through the girls that are getting deals outside the country has increased and also at the Cosafa tournament Zambian girls raised the flag high through individual performance.
Rachel nachula grabbed the golden boot award with 10 goals while Helen Mubanga was named player of the tournament as her strong showing took shepolopolo to the brink of the maiden title. At U-20 level Maylan Mulenga also won the golden boot award with the five goals she scored while Cynthia Shonga was named goalkeeper of the tournament.
