COSAFA U-20: Zambia beat Comoros to move closer to a semifinal slot
Zambia U-20 national team closed in on qualification to the semifinals of the ongoing COSAFA Qualifiers for TOTAL U-20 AFCON, Mauritania 2021after they beat Comoros 2-0 at Wolfson Stadium in Nelson Mandela Bay on Monday.
Zambia put up an improved performance from their opening match that saw them narrowly edge Namibia 1-0.
Left-back John Chishimba put the Young Copper Bullets in the lead as he scored with a fine finish inside the box just three minutes into the match.
Zambia came close a few times but Ricky Banda seemed like he left his scoring boots at the hotel. The defending Champions however added a second just before halftime when Derrick Bulaya had an easy tap-in from an assist by Prince Mumba.
In the second half, Comoros had a chance to reduce the deficit with a penalty, but Zambia goalkeeper Patrick Chooma saved Fahad Yacine’s effort. The Perry Mutapa tutored outfit went on to win the match 2-0 to lead pool B with six points.
Prince Mumba was named match of the match for his brilliant performance which includeded an assist for Bulaya’s goal.
In the other match on Group, B Namibia came from a goal down to beat Malawi 2-1 and revive their hopes of qualifying to the semifinals of the tournament
Zambia will meet Malawi while Comoros squares off with Namibia in the final games of group B on Wednesday.
Only the top team in each pool as well as the best-placed runner-up advance to the semifinals, while the two finalists at this year’s competition will win a place at the 2021 Africa Under-20 Cup of Nations.
The top four sides in Mauritania will win a place at the World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in Indonesia from May 20-June 12, 2021.
