Copper Queens through to COSAFA semis despite loss to Malawi
The Zambia Women’s national team suffered a 1-0 defeat to the Scorchers of Malawi this afternoon in the ongoing 2020 COSAFA Women’s Championship.
Temwa Chawinga scored the only goal in the 31st minute to hand Malawi a second group win and make sure they finish top of group B. It was a poor performance from coach Bruce Mwape’s team.
Despite the loss, Zambia has made it to the semifinal stage as the best loser ahead of visitors Tanzania and Angola.
The permutations were in favor of the Copper Queens, with the tournament regulations stating that the matches involving the bottom place side in Group A do not count towards the best runner-up calculations.
That left Group B’s Zambia on three points (and +7 goal-difference), Group C’s Tanzania on three points (even goal-difference), and Group A’s Angola on three points (-1 goal-difference).
The semifinals will see the defending champions South Africa clash with Malawi in the second semifinal on Thursday, while before that Botswana will take on Zambia.
