Copper Queens handed heavy defeat by Uganda ahead of AWCON

The Zambia Women’s National Team was handed a heavy demolition by the Crested Cranes of Uganda on Tuesday evening in an international friendly match ahead of their opening game of the 2022 Morocco Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Coach Bruce Mwape made seven changes to the team that thrashed Phoenix Marrakech FC 6-0 last week.

It was a slow start for both sides but Zambia had a chance to take the lead through Grace Chanda who missed a glorious opportunity.

Coach Bruce Mwape was forced to make a change after Lushomo Mweemba sustained an injury, Esther Banda came in for Mweemba.

THE CRAZY FIVE MINUTES

The Cranes then took over the show in the 39th minute with Rita Kivumbi scoring the opener before two more quick goals followed.

Fauzia Najjemba doubled the lead a minute later with Viola Nambi’s effort being deflected into the net two minutes to halftime, 3-0.

In the second stanza, Viola Nambi finally grabbed her goal before Substitute Ikwaput Fazilah could seal the win for the Crested Cranes.

The two teams were using this friendly as part of their preparation for the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The Copper Queens start their campaign against Cameroon at the Mohammed V stadium on July 3 before facing North Africans Tunisia three days later. They will wrap up their Group B engagement with a tie against debutants Togo on 9 July.

The semi-finalists from this tournament will automatically earn their tickets to next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup to be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand while the two quarter-finalists will have to battle it out in the inter-continental play-offs for a spot in the world’s biggest showpiece.

  1. When the coach Bruce Mwape decided to drop our best woman player for un known reason, no one took him to task to explain why?! In other countries the team coach must justify why with plausible explanations. Look at the men’s team to cosafa; It is obvious the best midfielder from defence force team has been denied a chance to feature at the tournament! Kamanga and his ilk are mute and are expecting good results! I think Kamanga is a bit timid for the game of football!

  2. Bruce Mwape is no coach. He continues the tendency of native Zambia coaches who believe just romping in talent will yield results.
This means the Zambia team not ready for this African Cup to be beaten that much by Uganda

  3. U thought Africa cup is for babies… living professionals who are playing in Europe..u decided to pick babies from the local league… expect worse when u meet Nigeria, south Africa and Cameroon

  4. To me that being just a friendly a few days before the actual thing, was a good wake up call to the team.
The coacj has also seen who has a cool head under pressure and who can keep a cool head when pressing.

After the 2 preparatory matches I sensed some over confidence creeping into the girls when they gave interviews. A win would have gone to most of their heads thinking they would be invincible.
That said, let’s see the actual games now.
