Copper Princesses Return Home After World Cup Journey

The Zambia U17 Women’s National Team returned home this (Saturday) afternoon following their campaign at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup Dominican Republic 2024.

Carol Kanyemba’s lasses arrived at 14h29 aboard an Emirates Airlines plane at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka. The Copper Princesses were in Group D and played matches against Brazil, Poland and Japan at the eighth edition of the tournament.

Kanyemba said the team had learned valuable lessons that will work to their advantage in the coming assignments.

“The experience at the World Cup was good for me as a coach, the technical bench, and the players as well. We didn’t bring back home the results that were expected. Still, football being what it is, we have learned a lot at the tournament and we look forward to becoming better coaches and players and delivering good results in future tournaments,” Kanyemba said.

“We have another World Cup coming up next year so the COSAFA will be preparation for the World Cup (qualifiers), we need to come up with a better team and get goals at the tournament. We need to score goals from the midfielders up to the striking force.”

Midfielder Lillian Mweenda described the experience as bittersweet.

“Although we lost (all the matches), we learned a lot at the World Cup and the environment was very good. We lost but we learned a lot playing against Japan, Poland, and Brazil,” Mweenda said.

“It felt great playing at a big tournament, it shows that hard work pays off. I was very happy (to make my debut) because it wasn’t easy but I made it and it was very good. I should continue working hard as I always do, I am supposed to continue working hard at my club (Elite Ladies) and put it more effort so that I play very well in future competitions.”
