CLUB vs COUNTRY: Forest Rangers’ Jonathan Munalula
Forest Rangers striker Jonathan Munalula will be watching on TV this afternoon as Zambia Under-20 take on Mozambique in the semi-finals of the COSAFA Under-20 Championship in South Africa.
Forest Rangers refused to release him for the tournament as they had a CAF Champions League assignment in Gabon despite him making the final list approved by the Confederation of African Football ( CAF) for the tournament.
With Fole Malembe exiting Africa’s premier competition, the kid is back in Ndola while his friends battle for glory in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
Munalula, only featured for less than 20 minutes from a possible 180 minutes against the Gabonese side both home and away raising questions as to why Forest Rangers were so reluctant to release him despite them clearly not needing him as much as they made it look.
In the meantime, should the Perry Mutapa coached side beat the Junior Black Mambas, they will qualify for the CAF Under-20 African Cup of Nations set for Mauritania next year.
Should Munalula be recalled to the team in the event the qualification to AFCON is achieved? That’s the million-dollar question and only time will tell.
