Club v Country Row: Sunzu yet to link up with squad

Chipolopolo Boys captain Stopilla Sunzu is likely to miss this weekend’s AFCON qualifier against Mozambique as the towering defender is yet to link with his international teammates in Maputo, Zambianfootball.co.zm understands.

The Football Association of Zambia, FAZ and French Ligue 2 side Sochaux have been embroiled in a club versus country over the availability of the centre back, and late Wednesday, it was agreed by the parties involved that the Chililabombwe born defender travels so that national team Doctor Joseph Kabungo can check on him.

Dr Joseph Kabungo on Wednesday

“We got a report from Sochaux on Monday that Sunzu sustained an injury on Friday during their game and I also had a chat with him. He has a problem with one of his hamstrings.

They were still looking at him from that end [France] yesterday [Tuesday] and Monday. He had a scan done on him and we have a report from his club,” he said.

Kabungo said despite availing them a medical, Sochaux should release the player so that they can also assess the injury.

“They [Sochaux] are supposed to do the right thing by sending the player. We are not against what the club has done but Sunzu is not just a Sochaux player, he is a Zambia national team player and we all have his interest at heart,” he said.

But the ZamFoot Crew reporters at the team’s hotel hasn’t spotted the defender and it now seems coach Honour Janza will go for the partnership of Nyambe Mulenga and Christopher Munthali in central defence.

There’s still chance that Sunzu might feature against Cape Verde in the home game at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium next Wednesday.

  1. Please if Sunzu is not fit, leave him alone. I know that as a country we really need his services but we should learn to move on with what we have. Moreover Nyambe Mulenga is showing some signs of maturity. What we just need is to find him a right patner, that is why I would suggest we need Kondwani Mtonga and nurture him into a defender after all Hearv Rena used to play him as a defender sometimes to patner Sunzu. What do others say?

  2. The Post reports that Joseph Kabungo has already examined Sunzu and declared him unfit for both Cape Verd & Mozambique.
Something is wrong with Zamfoot, so my comment will appear 2moro after moderation.

  3. If the guy is not yet in camp at this “late” juncture, he should NOT be considered for the game. It’s already too late and his inclusion would only disrupt team harmony and chemistry that’s already been built by those in camp. Sunzu is a good player but Zambia must learn to NOT overly rely on individual players. Much as we will miss his experience, this can be an opportunity for someone else to prove that Zambia has quality players waiting in the wings. Having said so however, hamstring or no hamstring Sunzu MUST be released by his club as a matter of principal to be assessed by his country. Mozambique to the sword!

  4. janza oredy has a plan. sunzu is a gud player. bt he will surely miss the match. we will still win the match without. him. the problem has to do with the pipo reporting. they shud have tokd to janza as he is the man with answers. and of course he knows whats in the best interests of the nation zambia. thus no need to make this issue a big fuss. go chipolopolo

  5. Zambia will beat Mozambique 2-1,no more hide and seek from the home team this time because the match might be an open affair depending on the home’s team ambition, all Zambia needs to do is to ensure they do not conceed the 1st goal.
