City of Lusaka applies some Veselin…As Yamoto name Serbian as head coach
Yamoto as they are fondly known, Eden University campaigners, City of Lusaka have contracted Veselin Jelusic to take the helm of their dugout with the hope of bringing lost glory days at the MTN Woodlands Stadium.
Veselin Jelusic is not new in the African football circles having had many stints with top African nations and clubs. He has coached Angola national football team, Botswana national football team and one of the clubs he has coached before is Bloemfontein Celtic who campaigns in the South Africa Premier Soccer League.
With such vast experience, City of Lusaka Football Club is hopeful of graduating from Eden University to the Super League to make meaning to their Yamoto name by taking the super league by storm once again
Veselin is not a new name in Zambia, As some time back the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) had embarked on the heading hunting process for an expatriate coach and they actually settled for Veselin Jelusic only for the government to reject his appointment. The ministry of Sports said it wanted to see a more transparent process for selecting the next Zambia coach, Acting Permanent Secretary Bessie Chelemu confirmed in an interview that the Government had noted with concern that the post was not advertised, with FAZ having identified Jelušić through an internal process which is headhunting. That is how Veselin missed out on the Chipolopolo top job.
The Serbian gaffer finally gets his wish to come to Zambia as he has been given a small portion of Zambia which is the City of Lusaka to test his credentials. On announcing his appointment, City of Lusaka said The Serbian-born coach will be the third European trainer to drill City of Lusaka Football Club after former Aston Villa and England national team striker John “Jackie” Sewell coached Yamoto in 1964, and Italian National, Roberto Landi.
Jelušić will be assisted by former National Assembly head coach George Kapembwa, who guided Yamoto to the Eden University National League. He will be unveiled to the media on Monday during a press briefing at MTN Stadium in Lusaka at 10:00 hrs were details of his contract will also be unveiled.
Yamoto was founded in 1937 and won its first super division title in 1964 the year which Zambia got its independence. The name Yamoto came in because they took Super League by storm in their early years in the super league, walloping other teams which were long campaigners in the super league. They were stubborn, difficult to beat despite been new boys in super league hence the name Yamoto (with fire).
Fast forward to the present days the team finds itself in the lower doldrums of the Zambian football. They are being schooled by Eden University and are in the school of football. They are hoping to scoop the scholarship which Eden University has said it will give to the best four performing students to go and further their studies in the Super school of the Zambia Super League. To increase their chances of claiming one of the four spots, they have hired a personal professor with versatile knowledge of African football in the name of Veselin Jelusic.
