Chris Katongo being linked with a return to Mufulira

Zambian football icon Chris Katongo is being earmarked for a possible coaching role at Mufulira Wanderers, the ZamFoot Crew understands.

The 36 year old has emerged as the bookmakers favourite to replace Justin Chinama who was sacked on Monday after a string of poor results.

Although the 2012 BBC African Player of Year is back at Green Buffaloes as one of the two assistants to reinstated Bilton Musonda, he might see a return to the Copperbelt as an opportunity to prove his coaching credentials after he flirted with the Buildcon job.

Katongo who led Zambia to the 2012 African Cup of Nations glory is regarded as one the greatest African players in a 15 years career.

Ashios Melu, Jericho Shinde, the Bwalya brothers; Benjamin, Kalusha and Joe, Johnstone Bwalya, Charles Musonda, George Lwandamina and Efford  Chabala are some of great names to have emerged from Mufulira.

In the last two decades or so, Rainford Kalaba, Sebastian Mwansa and the Katongo brothers; Felix and Chris Katongo were the latest players from the mining town even though none of them featured for either Blackpool or Wanderers.

Chris featured for Butondo Tigers before he was snapped by Kalulushi Modern Stars.

He then transferred Green Buffaloes.

Chris went on to play for clubs in South Africa, Denmark, Greece, Germany and China.

  1. Gabriel sendama says:

It’s not a bad idea to have him as coach at wanderers, look at Benni McCarthy, the guy has excelled at Capetown city, but Chris needs to be given the necessary support and back up from the management.its a 50-50 situation but I think he can manage.

  2. GSK11 says:

Jericho Shinde never played for Mufulira Wanderers.

  3. Its a good move and we should actually see more ageing players taking the roles of assistant coaches and technical assistants as a way of building up better local coaches and spend money on our own people who have played football and understand our style of play.FAZ should actually encourage this kind of moves and we will be the best football nation again. Look at Benson Chambeshi with the under 23 he went so far and he is still doing good job. The late Ucar Godfrey Chitalu are examples please let promote our local talents to a higher level guys time is now.

  4. Kasama Boy says:

Ashios Melu actually joined Mighty from Konkola Blades.

  5. Mwebantu says:

    Jericho Shinde NKANAAAAA!

  6. Mwila makungu says:

It’s just two things required; Give Christpher Katongo the job and support him by improving sponsorship for the club. Then Mighty will rekindle
