Chisi Mbewe happy with the Competition in the U-17 Camp as the squad is trimmed to 30 players

The Zambia U-17 national team assistant coach Chisi Mbewe says there is a lot of competition in camp as the team continues to gear up for the 2021 Africa Under-17 Cup of Nations to be staged in Morocco next month.

Mbewe also confirmed that the technical bench had reduced the squad from the initial 41 players to 30 as the 2021 AFCON U-17 preparations advance.

Speaking to ZAMFOOT Crew after Tuesday’s morning training session in Lusaka, Mbewe said the team was doing well and the competition in the camp was high.

“So far so good, the boys are sharpening up so well, there is a lot of competition and a lot of hard work in the team,” he said.

“We have remained with 30 boys at the moment we so far we doing good, It has been a challenge and it has been so competitive even those who have been left out are not bad players but as you know we are going to to the Africa Cup we need to best players so we are remaining with 30 but the number is going to be trimmed but so far so good,” Mbewe added.

The junior chipolopolo have several friendlies line up as they will be taking on the City of Lusaka on Wednesday at Woodlands stadium, and also on Thursday against a team from kabwe.

Zambia last appeared at this tournament in 2015 which saw the rise of stars such Prosper Chiluya, Jackson Kakunta, Patson Daka, and Enock Mwepu. The tournament was Zambia’s first-ever and could only manage one win, 2-1 over Niger, finishing third in group A.

The tournament will run from 13-31 March 2021 in Morocco.

The top four teams of the tournament would have normally qualified for the 2021 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru as the CAF representatives. However, FIFA decided on 24 December 2020 to cancel the tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
