Chipolopolo shoot down Zebra’s!! Mwepu, Sikombe help Zambia come from behind to beat Botswana

Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier: Zambia 2 – 1 Botswana (Enock Mwepu, Collins Sikombe | Tumisang Orebonye)

The Zambia national soccer team picked their first win the qualifying round for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations when they came from behind to beat Botswana 2 – 1 with Enock Mwepu and Collins Sikombe scoring a goal each.

It was a deserved win for Zambia who dominated the entire game against a tactically well organized Botswana team that sat back for most of the first half but still scored with their one attack of the first half.

Zambia coach Milutin Sredojević (Micho) seemed to have anticipated the tactical plan by the Tswanas and he named an attacking line-up with striker Ghampani Lungu filling in at right back.

Zambia were creating chances but failing to trouble the goalkeeper enough with the strikers either struggling to connect with the final ball or scuffing their efforts even when played into space as was the case with Sikombe in the 27th minute.

Justin Shonga and skipper of the side Lubambo Musonda who looked sharp in attack twice tested goalkeeper with well taken shots but Dambe in the Botswana goal was well positioned to save well.

Against the run of play, Botswana took the lead in the 45th minute after Tumisang Orebonye found himself free in the box and headed home for the opener.

After restarting from the goal, Zambia went straight into attack and the lively Lubambo beat his marker to square from Mwepu who finished with a well taken tap at the death of the half.

Micho made a change at half time and brought in Klings Kangwa for Augustine Mulenga.

With the visitors beginning to venture out in the second half, spaces were beginning to open up albeit the poor playing conditions after a heavy down pour.

Zambia sealed maximum points when substitute Fashion Sakala who came on for Shonga picked the ball in his own half on the right to race into the final third, beat his marker and square a good ball that was finished off by Collins Sikombe at the back post in the 67th minute.

The Zebra’s did not do much to trouble Chipolopolo with Mwange hardly having a save to make.

The win moves Zambia off the bottom into third position with three points in three games, while Botswana goes to the bottom of the table with just a point. Zambia must win the next game to have a chance of qualifying to the Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

The two teams meet again on Monday.

  6. Prince says:

Kingsley and Fashion should have started… Robust players doing well abroad, Shonga and Mulenga… really?!

    • Lukanga Kafusha Justice says:

@Prince I am surprised Shonga and Mulenga started ahead of Fashion and Kingsley. They should not have started in at all and neither should they have been in the squad at all. What is wrong with this coach? The 2 were failures at Orlando Pirates and yet are good enough for chipolopolo

      • Kopala says:

Am sure it was a matter of having worked with them before at Pirates meaning he thought it might be easier for them to understand his philosophy.

  7. makungu john says:

  8. Chifwa sylvester chilambwe says:

This micho, shonga and mulenga loyalty didn’t work for us, lets hope the coach is not blind. Shonga fluffed three siters in the first half and mulenga was totally a passenger.
