CAF CONFEDERATION CUP: ZANACO IN PYRAMIDS FC CHALLENGE
Zambia’s representatives in the CAF Confederation Cup, Sensational Zanaco this afternoon takes on Pyramids FC of Egypt at National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka in the first leg of their quarter-final tie.
The Bankers are aiming to make it to the semi-finals of the Competition for the first time in their history but in their quest to do that they must conquer the money bags of Egyptian football Pyramids whose squad is worth a whopping US$19m as compared to the bankers’ squad valued at US$ 900 000.
However, money and an extravagant squad do not guarantee the Egyptian side a win over the Bankers who are a tricky side to beat having gone to Cairo in 2016 and forced a draw against Al Ahly and just recently went to Morocco and held RS Berkane to a 1-1 draw.
Pyramids currently sit in 4th place on the log in the Egyptian league while zanaco is unbeaten in 11 games under Chris Kaunda.
The Bankers have won 9 (two of which came in this competition) and just drawn two since Chris Kaunda took over as head coach at Sunset Stadium.
Pyramids will have to really on El-Said Abdalla their captain who is their leading goal scorer in all competition and has vast experience having won the competition with Al ahly in 2014.
The 34-year-old has been one of the best players in the Egyptian league and zanaco has to be warry of him joining the strikers in the box.
He has 12 goals and four assists in his last 15 CAF Confederation Cup games and 11 goals in 15 Egyptian League games this season, meaning he averages about 1.4 goals per game.
Zanaco look to have a new lease on life under Chris Kaunda, striker Rodger kola has also found his goal-scoring form and he is the leading goal scorer in the competition with 3 goals and may just be the man to lead the attack and find the important goals that zanaco need ahead of the second leg in Cairo a week from now.
The match is free of charge but the fans are requested to pick up complimentary tickets at the Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) and Zambeef Marco at Independence Stadium Next to Total Filling Station.
The free tickets will be available at the named locations starting at 10h00 while gates at National Heroes Stadium will be opened at 12h00.
Kick-off is set at 15:00hrs CAT.
