CAF CONFED CUP: PYRAMIDS HUMILIATE ZANACO AT HOME TO LEAVE THEM ON THE VERGE OF ELIMINATION
Zambia’s representatives in the CAF Confederation Cup Sensational Zanaco were handed a humiliating 3-0 defeat by the Egyptian side Pyramids FC to leave them on the verge of elimination.
The Bankers came into the match on the back on an impressive run that saw them not lose a game in the Competition and unbeaten in their previous eleven matches in all competitions.
With Chitiya Mususu out injured Emmanuel Okutu got a rare start partnering Roger Kola upfront while Charles Zulu and Enerst Mbewe started on either wing with Kelvin Kapumbu and Kiala Lassa in the middle of the park.
It was the visitors who started strong controlling play and dominating the match from the onset. Their dominance paid off just 18 minutes into the match after defender Ali Gabr headed home an Abdallah El-Saed corner from close range after being found unmarked at the far post.
The Egyptian side doubled their lead six minutes later through winger Mohamed Farouk who slotted home inside the area after the Bankers failed clear their lines,2-0.
Coach Chris Kaunda tried to quickly find a solution and made a first-half substitution as he introduced Romaric Petroipa for Enerst Mbewe eleven minutes to half time.
In the second stanza, Zanaco looked better as they tried to come back in the match but they still could not create enough clear cut chances.
Things turned from bad to worse in the 67th minute when Belchance Makiese was judged to have brought down a Pyramids forward and the captain El-Saed Abdallah stepped up, Sent Toaster Nsabata the wrong way to seal a comfortable three-nil win for his side.
Pyramids will host the Bankers in the second leg on Sunday, 8th March at 15:00hrs at the 30 June Air Defence Stadium in al-Qāhirah, Cairo.
Zanaco Starting line up: T.Nsabata, L. Chungu, T.Lombard, B.Makiese, K.Owusu, K.Kapumbu, K.Lassa, E.Mbewe (R.Petroipa 34′), C.Zulu, E.Okutu (M.Nsofwa 58′), R.Kola
