CAF CL: Mulenga, Shonga strike as Pirates thump Lightstars

Orlando Pirates cruised to a 5 – 1 win in the the CAF Champions League preliminary round first leg match against Lightstars of Seychelles at Orlando Stadium in South Africa with Augustine Mulenga and Justin Shonga contributing a goal each.

Coach Micho Sredojevic named Augustine Mulenga in the starting line-up while Shonga started on the bench.

Mulenga was in devastating form and was in the thick of things as Pirates leveled through Qalinge in the 25th minute after shockingly going behind early in the game. He was unfortunate to see his effort come off the woodwork a few minutes later when he curled a shot from outside the box.

The former Zanaco winger then started a move from the top of the box and a double one two saw him finish with a well taken shot from inside the box in the 38th minute.

Makola made it four from a set piece in the 40th minute and Mulenga could have had his second when skinned his marker on the right to square the ball. The resultant shot deflected off him but he was wrongly ruled offside.

Shonga was introduced in he 79th minute to make his champions league debut and he picked he stepped up to take a free kick in additional time which expertly curled into the goal from outside the box. Mntambo scored the fifth a minute later.

It has been a great month for Shonga who has now scored three goals in four games in all competitions.

    Always try and partner them in the Chipolopolo because of the telepathy they have developed.

    These boys could not make it count for Zambia against Mozambique. Big players play big when the chips are down. That’s what Kalusha Bwalya and Mbesuma could do. Salvage a result in the toughest conditions. Though these boys are good but the haven’t reached the highest level yet…
