CAF CC: Smash & Grab! Mayuka shoots Napsa Stars into second round

CAF Confederation Cup: UD Songo 1 – 1 Napsa Stars (Lau King 22′ | Emmanuel Mayuka 74′) (Agg. 1-1)

Zambia’s representative in the CAF Confederation Cup Napsa Stars have qualified to the second round of the tournament after putting up a brave performance to draw 1 – 1 with UD Songo in a game played in Beira Mozambique. With the two teams having played to a goalless draw in Lusaka, Napsa edged their opponents on away goals.

Napsa will have former Chipolopolo striker Emmanuel Mayuka to thank as he showed class when he came off the bench to finish of a cross from the right with his first touch under pressure.

The pensioners started the brighter of the two sides, with good movement and passing in the midfield and were looking the more likely to score. But once the hosts got in the game, Napsa were clearly on the back foot with the right back position looking vulnerable with every attack that was being launched through that channel.

The persistent build ups by Songo paid off in the 22nd minute when Lau King rose high to head home from a cross coming from the same problematic wing.

With Napsa looking flat in attack, coach Mohamad Fathi was forced to make a change in the 43rd minute which saw him rest ineffective Daniel Adoko for Chanda Mushili.

After restart, the boys from Lusaka seem to start with some verve again and they continued to press for a goal but very little was being fashioned in the final third with Valério Macuacua hardly being troubled by any shot.

With 18 minutes to play, Fathi threw in Mayuka and Lawrence Chungu in what seemed to be the final throw of the die.

The 2012 Africa Cup of Nations golden boot winner did not disappoint as he smashed the ball in from a Chanda Mushili cross with great technique for the equalizer despite being under pressure from his marker in the 74th minute. It was only his second touch of the ball.

Despite a few scares, Napsa managed the game well to pick a draw that sees them move on to next round of the tournament.

  3. Ante Buselic says:

Is there anyone who can listen and assist Zambian soccer?? The coaches do not know what SHAPE means to a defensive formation.
Defenders are not strikers, their job is to defend an area…period. ! For as long as you have a defence that only knows ball watching, you will be vulnerable especially in the wing…
