AfCON Dream in tatters!!! Zambia beaten in Botswana

Botswana 1 – 0 Zambia (Mosha Gaolalwe 8′)

Zambia’s dream to return to the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in 2021 has been dealt a major blow after they went down 1 – 0  to Botswana on Monday evening. The result leaves Zambia rock bottom in Group H with only 3 points from four games.

It was a poor display by the Chipolopolo who failed to register a shot on target in the game and will have themselves to blame for allowing Botswana to score early in the 8th minute from what seemed to be a tame cross.

Coach Milutin Sredojević (Micho) made three changes to the team that beat Botswana on Thursday bringing in Fashion Sakala, Klings Kangwa and Kondwani Chiboni for Justin Shonga, Augustine Mulenga and Ghampani Lungu. However there was very little on display in the final third for Zambia credit to a great defensive display by the hosts.

Despite Zambia starting the livelier of the two sides, Botswana took the lead when a cross from the right eluded both Luka Banda and Kelvin Kapumbu for defender Mosho Gaolalwe to knock it home from close range with his thigh.

Botswana immediately put numbers behind the ball and Zambia struggled to fashion any chances in attack. The Chipolopolo could have gone two goals down when a good counter attack saw a striker run through the middle to out pace Zechariah Chilongoshi and Kelvin Kapumbu only to see his effort come off the upright with Sebastian Mwange in the Zambia goal beaten in the 39th minute.

Micho rang the changes at half time removing defender Kondwani Chiboni for Lungu and Kangwa for Justin Shonga. The changes upped the pace for Zambia and they were beginning to create spaces but nothing was coming off for the Chipolopolo in terms of testing the goalie.

Despite ending the game with a number of known attackers on the pitch – Bruce Musakanya, Ghampani Lungu, Shonga, Emmanuel Chabula, Kelvin Kampamba, Collins Sikombe, Fashion Sakala and Enock Mwepu, the closest Zambia came to getting an equalizer was in the 87th minute when Sakala saw his volley come off the cross-bar from a Mubanga long throw-in.

With only two more games to play, Zambia will have to win the remaining two matches against Algeria (Home) and Zimbabwe (Away) to have a chance of making an appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations tournament after missing out on the last two editions.

The Chipolopolo end Match Day 3 at the bottom of Group H with three points, Botswana are third with 4 points, Zimbabwe 5 points and leaders Algeria qualified with 10 points.

    It’s bad feeling for me.

  2. Chifwa sylvester chilambwe says:

Maybe we should just be playing cosafa, people involved in organising the national sport should know that some of us are truly hate by these loses. Though chipolopolo are like a child who fails an exam and you want them to try again, one needs to know where they went wrong

We should look forward and not give up

  4. Sido says:

It’s sad indeed ,our defence is not good.

  5. Michael says:

Give the swatnas a big congrats

This coach micho talks too Much.Sven shud have been given more time.Faz had failed us

  7. Aduanani says:

No chance of advancing. Except Algeria, who have qualified, puts up a second team for the boys to massacre them.

  8. Midfielder says:

Zambian coaching system is based on poor quality. Too much dependency on white men. You cried for independence and yet you still calling them back to help you.

How can you trust your enemy?

You chaste the whites and ask to come back. You waste your money by giving to white men and they develop their home and you start beg from the same enemies you chaste.

  9. Ben says:

l did watch the game but from what l observe that we need creative mildfielders like Felix Katongo and Mukuka Mulenga but unfortunately mukuka was ruined by RSA clubs

  10. Next King says:

How many times have some of us talked about a collapsing wing defence. ??? What kind of a technical bench do we have that fails to see this weakness. ??? The writing has always been on the wall. Zambia has no defence especially in the wings. The defenders always leave their position to follow the ball. Good we won’t make it to Afcon because it would have just been a waste if tax payers money.

Bring back experienced players like Sunzu, Kabaso, Triple C, Mwape Musonda and Goal keeper from South Africa not mwee

Well done Zebras, there is still hope…

  13. Enock says:

This Micho guy is has failed, I know are not believing me, but look at the types of subs he makes. Moreover, why use a completely different team in friendlies only to use shonga & Augustine, by the way could we have won the friendlies if we had use this line up?

  14. Slim says:

Someone at Faz needs to reign in Micho when it comes to selection of players. He has a self centred attitude. Why omit keeper Chibwe of rsa, triple ccc, striker Musonda of uae, Chirwa of simba, Sunzu a defender; he decided to bring Shonga and Auga who have been inactive for a long time. If this mishandling of players continues I dont thing we even have a slight chance. Michos reign will be short lived.

  15. Muchinga says:

The team cannot be formed overnight. The coach need time. Look at Liverpool, the coach “Kloop came to build the team, it took us liverpool for 4-5 years to see the results. Latest help this man, he can build a good team.

  16. We have players but we don’t have a team yet.Mistake will be to fire the coach.Give him 4 years to make a team.

  17. Its sad to think that Sunzu is still the Sunzu he was in the past.Umuntu alipwa imwe

  18. Julio says:

In my opinion, the team lacks leaders to organize the team on pitch and push others when the chips are down. I agree that the lack of experienced defensive cover also contributed. The coach is ok. He needs time. But next time call the likes of Sunzu or Nathan for experience sakes. There’s still hope. Let’s reorganize before our last 2 games. Should we beat both Algeria at home and Zim in the their backyard, we might still have a shot at finishing second.

  19. Sibs says:

1.Our Defense is our weakest Link. The Coaches should know better. Bring back S.Sunzu to patner T.Mwape. T.Mwape for me despite that mixup is good defender but needs someone like Sunzu with experiance to calm him down.
    2. You need a Good Central Defensive Midfielder to protect that defence. Someone who can cut off any attacks and be Link up with the midfield. That name is NATHAN SINKALA. He is the best in Zambia at the moment if you don’t agree with me you are in denial but you entitled to your own opnion.
    3. We need a guy like Mwape Musonda who can hold the ball and also has the ability to find the back of the net. Yesterday the Tswanas had big boys in defense and bullied F.Sankala who tried his best and was played as a lone striker. Let Patson Daka and M.Musonda play as twin strikers. I was surprised that Mwape Musonda was not called even with PD20 injured.
    4. Let the best players come and play. No personal vendettas. K.Chongo, Triple C, Chibwe the Goal keeper from RSA should be given an opportunity.
    5. If we think we can beat Zimbabwe away and Algeria at home with the team i watched last night we are joking. Our boys lack experience because the mostly new players or players with less than 20 Caps. Zimbabwe have tough tested Warriors and the same with Algeria.
    5. We know Micho is building his own team but he has to swallow his pride and bring some of the experienced players mentioned back to the the team. We started with 2 loses in a row and it was going to be a difficult hurdle for the new Coach to catch up. But losing to Botswana with all due respect to Botswana was a bitter pill to swallow.
