Action for Lubambo Musonda in a 6-goal stalemate
In a Matchday 3 evening encounter of the Polish PKO Ekstaklasa, 2nd placed Śląsk Wrocław hosted 11th placed Lech Poznań.
As most ardent Chipolopolo followers may remember, Lech Poznań is the Polish club the late Derby Makinka played for during his brief stint in Europe.
In today’s game, Zambia’s export to Poland, Lubambo Musonda continued were he left off before the international break. He was named in the starting XI and given an attacking role on the right-wing in a 4-2-3-1 formation.
Fans were treated to an entertaining match. Both teams began the game lively. However, it was Lech that took an early lead in the 7th minute. A ball played into the penalty area found the feet of Mikael, who made no mistake from close range.
Śląsk immediately searched for an equalizer. Their efforts were rewarded when Piotr Celeban scored for hosts in the 12th minute to level matters. Śląsk wasted no time to make it 2-1 when they benefited from a lapse in concentration from the visitors to take the lead through a Mathieu Scalet effort which was cleared over the line by the opposition keeper. Following the consultation of VAR officials, the goal was awarded to Śląsk.
From then on Śląsk enjoyed a good spell. Lubambo caused problems for the opposition on the right flank. He had a great chance to add a 3rd goal for the hosts, but to be denied by Bednarek, the opposition keeper.
In the 28th minute, Lech evened the score following some chaotic defending from the hosts that allowed Dani Ramirez to tap in Mikael Ishak’s pass. The game finally switched on its head when Lech scored their 3rd goal of the day when Ishak benefited from a good cross from the right to skilfully beat the host’s keeper with a half volley. The first half finished with Lech taking a narrow lead of 3-2.
Another twist would follow in the second half. Musonda made an intelligent ran on right. He was fouled, fell in the penalty area and the referee gave a penalty shot. Robert Pich converted the resulting penalty to make it 3-3!
As the game went on, both teams slowed the pace. Śląsk resorted to quick counter-attacks and shots from outside the penalty area. Neither Pich nor Lubambo could beat Bednarek in goal.
Lubambo was withdrawn in the 83rd minute. He will be proud of his contributions to today’s game.
The 6-goal thriller ended in a stalemate of 3-3. The result sends Śląsk to the top of the league table on 7 points, 1 point clear of 2nd placed Górnik Zabrze and 3rd placed Zagłębie Lubin; who both are tied on 6 points and have a game in hand.
Śląsk’s next match will be an away fixture at Pogoń Szczecin on 19/09/2020 at 17.30 (CAT).
