2019 AFCON : Shitembi, Sabamukama and Mavugo off to Egypt as Akumu and Lombard miss out

A number of teams heading to Egypt for the Africa Cup of Nations have named their final 23 man squads. Kenya national team coach Sebastian Migne has surprisingly dropped Zesco United midfielder Anthony Akumu from his squad.

Akumu played a key role in Zesco United’s season helping them to finish on top of Stream A and reaching the CAF Confederation Cup group stage. Nkana defender Musa Mohammed and Zesco United center-back David Owino have all made the cut.

The Harambee Stars are getting will face Democratic Republic of Congo in their final pre-AFCON friendly match set to be played on Saturday, June 15th in Madrid, Spain. They will jet into Egypt on June 19th five days before their opening match of the tournament against Algeria.

Four Zambia Super League players have been included in the Burundi national team final 23 man squad for the 2019 Africa Cup of nations by coach Olivier Niyungeko.

Zesco United’s creative midfielder Enock Sabamukama, Transitional league joint top goalscorer Laudit Mavugo, Buildcon defender David Nshimirimana and  Lusaka dynamos goalkeeper Arthur Mac Arakaza will be in Egypt with the Swallows.

The Swallows are set to make their first debut ahead of the total Africa Cup of Nations in their opening game against Nigeria slated for 22nd June 2019 in Egypt

Lusaka dynamos talented attacking midfielder Petrus Shitembi has been named in coach Ricardo Mannetti’s 23 member squad for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. Shitembi was one of the most outstanding players in the just ended Super League season and will be a key member of the Brave Warriors of Namibia as they look to go far in group D.

Another Lusaka dynamos player in Willy Stephanus has made the cut. Defender Tiberius Lombard has surprisingly been a drop from the squad. Lombard struggled with an injury during the transitional league season and maybe that’s why he misses out on the Egypt bound squad.

The Brave Warriors will play Morocco on 23 June before taking on South Africa on 28 June, both at Al Salam Stadium. They will play their final group game against Ivory Coast on 1 July at Cairo International Stadium.

Look at the tactical approach of the Ivory Coast.

They have invited Zambia for a friendly in Abu Dhabi (I do not know who will pay the cost of this extension to the Mediterranean tour of the Chipolopolo), the reason they have done this is simple.

They have South Africa and Namibia in their group.

So the lesson they will get by playing Zambia in a friendly will gear them well for these 2 teams who are in the same region and play the same sort of game.

How I wish Zambian could also be doing that every time they have a big game.

I wish Kenya a good outing. They have a good side. They should just play with some arrogance. And then there is Egypt, then Senegal. It has potential to be the most classy AFCON. What do you think Mr. Kamanga? Our shambles should not ever happen again, sir.
