ZSL: Nkana, Lusaka Dynamos win away on match day 1

Nkana Power Dynamos

Power Dynamos on Saturday afternoon came from behind to beat a determined Napsa Stars side 2 – 1 in a game played at Arthur Davies stadium.

Power started the game on a high as they seemed to start from where they left off in the Charity shield with some good movement on and off the ball but a swift counter attack saw Matthews Macha squeeze in a shot from outside the area which Joshua Titima failed to deal with despite getting a hand to it.

Power did not look deterred in their pace with the goal and some good work on the left by Kelvin Mubanga Kampamba saw him provide a second assist in as many games to set up Larry Bwalya who rose high to score with a header. Bwalya again benefited from a Mubanga assist when Power won the Charity Shield on Wednesday.

Napsa looked good on the counter attack and had a goal disallowed for offside and moments later Patson Daka showed individual effort when he wrestled for a 50-50 ball to pounce on a resultant loose ball to score from within the box to record his first goal in over a year.

In the early kick-off, substitute Thomas Mbolela scored the only goal of the game when Lusaka Dynamos beat newly promoted Mufulira Blackpool 1 – 0. Former Nkana captain Sydney Kalume was the man of the match after a good performance in midfield to hold off the speedy Blackpool attackers.

Chipolopolo teen striker started for Perry Mutapa’s Lusaka Dynamos and was unfortunate not to have his name on the scoresheet after his shot from within the box came off the upright.

Ten man Lusaka Tigers have started life in the elite league on a high after they beat visiting Nchanga Rangers thanks to a Jimmy Sondashi own goal.

Nkana were also victors away against Nkwazi with goals from Shadreck Musonda and Walter Bwalya.

The game between Red Arrows and Nakambala was not played after Arrows were excused as their Air-force side’s players are still out on military training.

On Saturday I was sitting, sipping on Orange juice watching Muf Blackpool and Lsk dynamos play at football when I noticed something very peculiar in the dynamos tactics. The players (and I’m assuming the coach had no foreknowledge of this) were playing a very dangerous game. The game they were playing can be called “don’t give Conlyde the ball unless he’s in an impossible situation.” A number of times I saw the young star drift into space awaiting that killer pass which never came. Those who have played football can attest to the fact that at times when the team is not happy with a new guy stealing their mate’s position they play such little tricks to make the new guy look hopeless. I can only assume that behind the scenes the players ain’t happy with the special treatment some people are getting, particularly if you are let’s say an excellent number 11 and you feel you are closer to Messi than the other guy.
Something else I noticed in the dynamos camp, the guy who eat doing all the work in midfield last season, the guy who was captain of the team and I would argue is the reason they stayed up (Luchanga also did his part but he wasn’t alone), that guy was dropped to the bench and stripped of his captaincy. Lsk dynamos have a strange way of rewarding hard effective sweat and toil. Habasimbi in sure wouldn’t mind if he was dropped for a more experienced player to take up the captaincy, a player like Sydney Kalume but who do dynamos decide to make captain? I’m sure an experienced coach like Mutapa would not make such fundamental errors, I can only assume these are boardroom decisions. But Lsk dynamos to me looks like it’s on a knife edge, another wrong move and they will walk into catastrophe. It’s ironic that when Habasimbi came on his quality was immediately clear for all to see and he brought forward momentum to the dynamos attack. They have the players to do well this season. Let’s hope they have the staff to manage the impending crisis too.
