Zanaco Football Club defender Ziyo Tembo has been named the 2016 MTN FAZ Super League Player of the Year at the awards ceremony held at the Hotel Inter-Continental on Tuesday evening.

While commanding his teammates from defence, the Zanaco captain contributed four out of the seventy-one league goals his club scored in the 2016 season. He also scored two goals in the Caf Confederation Cup. His defensive prowess meant that Zanaco only conceded 16 goals in 34 matches, the least by any team in the league.

His contributions in the league did not go unnoticed, leading to his first national team invitation in July by coach George Lwandamina for the Africa Cup of Nations Cup qualification match with Kenya and for Fifa World Cup qualifiers with Nigeria and Cameroon under Wedson Nyirenda.

He held off competition from Nkana forward Walter Bwalya who scored 24 goals to win the Top Scorers Award and Zesco United midfielder Misheck Chaila.

Tembo was also nominated for the most Disciplined Player Award but that one went to Zesco United goalkeeper Jacob Banda.

Power Dynamos striker Patson Daka walked away with the Young Player of the Year award  after seeing off the challenge of Zanaco midfielder Charles Zulu and Zesco United winger Shemmy Mayembe.

Zanaco coach Mumamba Numba won the Coach of the Year award after winning the league in his first full season in charge.

Wisdom Chewe won the Best Referee of  Year while it was Kabwe Chansa who won the Best Assistant Referee of the Year.

Referee Janny Sikazwe received the FAZ President’s award.

All 18 Super League clubs also received financial awards based on their final positions on the league table, with champions Zanaco receiving K250,00.00 while runners-up Zesco United received K100,000.00.

    • Aa Prince: Oh yes he is a good player. For sure, on the field of play, with all those skillful midfielders and strikers; its never easy to notice a defender being a good player.

  1. Congrats. He had a solid game for the national team. Not the most creative player in terms of a killer pass from behind but very effective with the “defend first” philosophy.

Congrats and keep on striving for more awards.

  2. we would hav qualified for Afcon with Ziyo and Sunzu! BUt for the Chicken shit of a coach, omittimg him and Kapumbu! Reason? Cos Zanaco chairman was at loggerheads with Kalu!

  3. Just want to commeent on zambian soccer,we have good and avarage players, but is killing the flayer is our pitches are horrible, bumpy and not even, the type of grass also we use is not favorable…..take an example a player comes to psl in S A , they adopt the carpet soccer ,our players can’t player carpet soccer coz picthes are bumpy ,,,,its bubbly and high balls only ….ba faz make a plan for the two stadias levy and heroes so we can enjoy the bola yapa zed

  4. LWANDAMINA SHOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE COACH OF THE YEAR. WHAT HE DID WAS NO MEAN ACHIEVEMENT. NO ZAMBIAN COACH HAS EVER REACHED A SEMI FINAL IN A CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE COMPETITION, NOT EVEN QUARTER FINAL.

  5. I thought that this award should have been given to nkana striker walter bwalya who scored 24 league goals because it has been long since the player in our league scored more than 20 goals.the prize money that is given to the champion and the runner up is too small and mr kamanga should doing something about it.

  6. Its high time that you,mr kamanga you should start fulfilling your elections promises because ever since you were elected you have done completely nothing to improve our football in zambia.I know that you have never succeeded in any thing that you have done but just try may be you can succeed this time
