Zimbabwe retain Cosafa title after Zambia concede late

Zimbabwe picked a 6th record Cosafa Cup title at the expense of Zambia who they beat 4 – 2 in extra time after the game ended 2 – 2 in regulation time.

Zambia looked set to overturn the 2017 result which saw Zimbabwe beat them to the trophy in the final as they cruised to the 90th minute leading 2 – 1 thanks to two Lazarous Kambole goals.

But some lapses in concentration saw the Warriors equalize in the second minute of additional time and go to win with a brace from Tino Kadewere and Khama Billiat.

Zimbabwe got off the mark when Kadewere was gifted a pass by Martin Sikaonga in the 4th minute to find himself one on one with Toaster Nsabata and he made no mistake to slot past the Chipolopolo goal minder.

Zambia reacted well and were back on level terms after a defense splitting pass from Clatous Chama found Kambole who managed to go round George Chigova in the Zimbabwe goal to finish off a neat move started by John Chingandu in the 8th minute.

It was a cagey game from then on and after the restart, Zambia again showed brilliance when Kambole received a cleared ball on the left which he played out to Chama and the classy attacking midfielder played a through ball for the pacy striker who outrun his marker to shoot home from a tight angle in the 50th minute.

Chambeshi brought in Collins Sikombe for ineefective Kelvin Mubanga in the 59th minute but Zimbabwe continued pushing for the equlaizer.

The Chipolopolo had their opponents where they wanted, even when they got a sniff on goal, Nsabata was on point as was the case when he dived to his left to save from close range after a corner in the 67th minute.

With just 2 minutes to play, Ronald ‘Sate Sate’ Kampamba was brought in for injured Kambole and Zambia looked like they woulf wrap up the result when Chama nutmegged a Zimbabwean defender to find Sate Sate in free space with only the keeper to beat but he sent his shot on to the upright.

Zimbabwe launched the ball forward from the rebound and with three touches, they had equalized with Kadewere pouncing on a lay off from Billiat.

It was Kampamba again who found himself defending in the Zambia box and this time he was beaten by Billiat and the Nkana striker tackled from behind for Zambia to concede a penalty which was duly converted by Billiat in the 100th minute.

With Kambole out of the game, the Chipolopolo lacked power in attack and as they desperately pushed for an equalizer, they were caught on the counter attack which they could not defend outnumbered 3 v 2 for Billiat to again slot past Nasabata.

Zambia will return from the tournament with one win, one draw, one loss and three goals all scored by Kambole.

    • True…….Collins Sikombe incident in the box was a penalty. There were many other funny decisions made against Zambia. I tend to believe that the result was predetermined.

  1. Being a footballing nation,it pains to lose but its OK we were able to expose some lads to international games the team looks good so please this time faz no going to the drawing board.

  2. It seems painful but at the same time chipolopolo will gain in that they have exposed a lot of youngsters If you look at Zimbabwe it was more of bragging rights than winning itself. If we get a clever Coach He would put together a formidable team as He would have a wider pool of players to choose from. I foresee Chipolopolo to be a force to recon with as we have excellent players but all we need is a tactician to put together a great squad.

  3. We must start now to put together the U17 in readiness for the Cosafa 2018 in July as from what was reported the winner will represent the Cosafa region at the 8 team AFCON U17 in Tanzania. I love it because we have a lot of youngsters playing excellent soccer in this era than any other time.

  4. dont blame the ref I we. we r simply just useless. wen a game has wound down u pack the bus. coach is also totaly uselss. I used to say herve is useless but our local coaches are uselessest. tafyakwata amano. no tact. cosafa is a useless tournament nothing to learn from it. sate sate pliz stay pachilata where we enjoy yo showboating. yo papa chambeshi has blind faith in you.

  5. Tell them @stumpy tell them my brother tell them ati we must empower our own coaches people with the talent we have all we need is a shroud tactic tian then we game mind you that is just Zambia d playing against Zim b. Just food thought sate we love so so much as Nkana faithfully but please retire from national team you have done your part my boy.

  6. even the commentators wanted us to lose….kikikii..finshi twachita?? This squad combined with the best players will be quite formidable…

  7. Thank iu Beston and Sate for fluffing a winner an costing a penalty. Renard 4 years ago said Sate is no player! But this dull coach. Awe mwe…..

  8. At least Cosafa has exposed triple C, Mayembe, Kambole, Billy Mutale. Wada Wada did not want these players. Its a wonder this idiot coacH thought he was a God. As dull as Chambeshi, plus Sate Sate get lost.

  9. Okay Sate took his shot very well- Nutmeg, poachers skill- no time to waste. Typical Sate Sate. Mow, he should probably study the original Ronaldo of Brazil. You do a half shuffle at Pace and take it a litle wide and away from the keeper who was coming out of his line at speed. So you send his brain to the left and go right at Pace as well. Sate Sate, Patson, kangwa, Kambole, seargent at pirates are some of the best strikers we have been developing through national team age group tournaments. Don’t forget. He has a gold medal or two at junior tournaments. He represents the intake that was supposed to succeed Katongo’s group. That’s Kangwa and Donashano’s group.

  10. Big footballing nations qualify to big tournaments and use meets like Cosafa to expose new lads look at Sasa and Zambia congrats girls for qualifying to Ghana honestly speaking like never gave you not even slightest chance of over turning that

  11. But, there an incident halftime of ET where an official from zimbabwe was seen inside the pitch put something in socks of the Ref. Me, I saw what really transpired. What about FAZ and The Technical beach?

But I said it before that, if Kambole score first; we were not going to win the game

  12. Hi guys. It should be a year ago since I posted on this page. Here in Ghana, our football is in the gutters. Our FA Boss and his monarchy has just been overthrown. Ghanasoccernet has lost its dignity so the rivalry thing is gone. I hope we meet in AFCON and rekindle those chipante pante and bola ya pa zed arguements

  13. One has to accept that we were using a makeshift Chipolopolo. Our coach resigned this month or last. Chambeshi only started training with this group about 2 weeks ago and the idea was to expose and steel the nerves of those young stars.
To me the objective was fully met. We exposed our future [ayers to the rigours of a tournament. Winning against a fully fledged Zimbo National team would have just been a bonus. They had their full Arsenal, while we didn’t. They pressed through and through and the lads held their own. We outplayed them with very intelligent counter attacks, but they out-muscled us, physically.
The Kampamba miss, and the subsequent penalty deflated us. No one should be blamed since that is football, you miss the other side to put your team 3-1 with a minute to go and as the ball swings into your area they equalise and send you into extra time. You get deflated and tired, while they get motivated.
Of course there were a number of tactics that could have won us the cup, like feigning injury, packing the bus, going to block them in the corner flag and all the jazz, but it wasn’t to be.
Personally I am very impressed with Chambeshi and as I always advocate, send the guy for capacity building in Europe or South America or to both and let him come back and coach locally.
    Out time will come.

    • Thanks my fellow Zambians for your comments but let me correct you that was not a full strength Zimbo team dont full yourselves.Zimbabwe has got large pool of players playing overseas and in SA who were not called.
