Zesco Utd crowned Champions as Nkana, Buffaloes, Eagles take CAF slots

Zesco United were officially crowned 2018 MTN FAZ Super League champions after their match with Red Arrows on Saturday and they, along with Nkana, will represent Zambia in the 2018/19 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League.

The two CAF Confederation Cup spots have gone to Green Eagles and Green Buffaloes, based on the collective agreement by the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) and Super League clubs that reprentative teams would be decided by the league standings as at Week 35 on 7th October, 2018.

It is the first time in the club’s history that Green Eagles will have qualified for any CAF organised competition. Their tally of 68 points in a single season is also unprecedented.

The CAF had given member associations the period between 17 July and 15 October, 2018 to confirm participation and register their representative clubs for the 2018/19 CAF Interclub competitions – Champions League and Confederation Cup – which will follow the new transitional calendar aimed at switching the competitions from the February-November to the August-May calendar.

In Zambia, the deadline of 15 October has been and remains a contentious subject, especially by football fans, because by then there will still be one match left before the season ends on 17 November, and that could come with a possible change in the top four positions, as Zanaco are only a point adrift of Green Eagles who lost to Buildcon on Saturday and Green Buffaloes who are away to New Monze Swallows on Sunday.

It is believed that due to this scenario, the FAZ will submit more than four clubs to the CAF, with Zanaco as the stand-by team to cushion any changes which could occur in the standings as at Week 38.

Should that be the case, qualification for the Confederation Cup by either Green Eagles or Green Buffaloes, will in the meantime be regarded as tentative.

Zesco has returned the league title and it’s their 7th.

Meanwhile, Zesco United have now won the league seven times – having done so in four of the five recent seasons – since their first title in 2007, making them the most dominant team in the MTN FAZ Super League in the last twelve seasons. Their dominance has been kept in check by Zanaco, who have won three titles, as well as Nkana and Power Dynamos, who have won the league once each during the same period.

Should they win their final league match with Green Eagles next month, Zesco United, who are currently on 80 points, will break the record for the highest points tally recorded by a team in the MTN FAZ Super League in a single season.

Zanaco are the record holders, with 81 points recorded when they won the league in 2016 but then the league had 18 teams compared this season’s 20.
