Zesco, Swallows share spoils
Zesco United and Mbabane Swallows settled for 1-1 draw in their CAF Champions League Group D match played at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Saturday.
The result leaves the group evenly poised, with Primero de Agosto (Angola) hosting Etoile Sportif du Sahel (Tunisia) on Saturday evening.
Although Swallows seemed to have settled earlier than their hosts in the opening exchanges, it was Zesco who looked dangerous going forward once they had gotten into their stride.
Their first attempt arrived in the fifth minute when John Ching’andu was unlucky to see his effort from inside the box blocked by his teammate Winston Kalengo.
A minute later it was Lazarus Kambole who found himself through on goal, but with only the goalkeeper to beat he shot wide of target.
The third chance presented itself in the eighth minute with Anthony Akum’s long-range effort drifting wide of target following a corner and not long after that Kalengo failed to get his shot on target after being charged down by a Swallows defender.
Ching’andu would then see his on-target effort blocked following a corner in the 18th minute, while Fackson Kapumbu and Jesse Were ballooned their efforts over the bar in the 35th and 45th minutes respectively.
It was not until first half additional time that the visitors registered their first attempt, but Wonder Nhleko’s effort was off target as the two sides stayed goalless at the break.
After the break, with Zesco failing to break down the Swallows defence, Kondwani Mtonga was forced to shoot from range, his effort going over and wide on 54 minutes.
Ten minutes later Zesco got their breakthrough, with David Owino heading home from a corner delivered by John Ching’andu.
Zesco United nearly scored a quickfire second but Kapumbu’s powerful low free kick flew straight at the Mbabane Swallows goalkeeper.
However, it was the visitors who would get back on level terms, with second-half substitute Mangaliso Shongwe, who had replaced Daniel Atakorah on 65 minutes, rising highest to head home a Tony Tsabeze cross in the 79th minute.
Zesco’s next match will see them travelling to Etoile Sportif du Sahel while Swallows will be at home to Primero de Agosto.[Supersport]
